Thanks for posting those links, Sal. Those are great deals for anyone that's shopping around right now. Didn't you have an Adi topped J-35 from the custom shop? I don't see it on your current list. If so, what did/do you think of it?

Bozz... I had an Adi topped SJTV - hide glue top braced... etc... Same kind of beast. I sold it. There was nothing wrong with it at all. It was light weight, and dry...

I probably should not have sold it, but I did, and I replaced it with a J45 Standard which I also like a lot, and is really good to gig with, and I put money in my wallet in the process.

Sal, aside from that, having had both, I'm curious what you think of the Adi vs Sitka business. I know that's hard though, because you might prefer the one you have now, logically; or, if you're unlucky like some of us, you might think, "Gee, I preferred the one I let go of!" :P

The reason I ask is both because I'm curious about red spruce and because I have a Martin M-36 with an Italian Alpine spruce top, and sometimes I wish I'd just kept good old sitka instead! In my opinion, sitka is kind of hard to beat, and I think if we ran out of it and only had other types of spruce, maybe including red spruce, people would pay a lot for the sitka and talk about how great it was. I know, supply and demand and all...

Ahhh, I must have been thinking of your SJTV. I already have a J-35, but this version REALLY interests me.

I'll be honest. I don't know if I can tell the difference sonically between Adi and Sitka. I had a 2007 J45TV which was sitka topped, and this SJTV which was Adi topped. They both had that nice growly dry voice, and I dont think blindfolded I would be able to distinguish between the guitars. They were both great.

Many of us just like trying sampling different guitars, and I have done that. Almost any of my guitars, except the new D18, I could have kept for life and been happy with (the D18 excluded because I didnt like the neck). I could have stopped playing with slopes with my J45TV, and been exactly where I am now, instead of being out short dollars. But I guess I enjoy the journey regardless.

Monogamy is a good thing (I have been married 25 years). But with guitars I think its kind of ok to cheat a little and have some fun.

Yep, I hear ya. I have felt guilty for my "cheating" time after time (guitars, not the lady!)--but it is better to just enjoy the ride! I always think I am getting closer to sticking with what I've got, but who knows. :) Can't imagine parting with my Hummingbird... ever... unless it were lost/stolen/destroyed. Doesn't mean I don't want an SJ... feeling as though then I'll be "done"... :P

I do think we play up differences a lot. Hell, sometimes I can't even tell the difference between rosewood and mahogany. Usually I can, but I can also be fooled. Will freely admit I seriously doubt I could tell the difference between strings someone is playing, or the gauge of strings, just by listening. Playing, yeah. Listening, probably not. Often I can't even tell if someone's strings are brand new, and that is a sound I despise as a player :P

I remember calling musicians friend two years ago inquiring about that Gibson Stage Deluxe. Their best price on it was $3800. Now it's $2500, and I don't want it. Time = the great equalizer.

Curious as to why the price has come down so much on the Stage Deluxe. Think they have been returned? Maybe they are really tight sounding and don't have the appeal. I'd sure like to try one to find not. To me, that just might be my perfect dream guitar configuration.

How would Sal's opinion about sitka vs adirondack Gibsons impact your opinion of your Alpine spruce Martin?

Who knows with me! I guess the parallel I was drawing was, I sometimes wish my M-36 had good old standard Sitka, and I wondered if he was happier with Sitka.

Always interesting what does or does not appeal to someone.

For me, the Stage Deluxe is a total turn off:

Only twelve frets clear & that tiny little burst.

But we're lucky to have so many choices these days!

That is interesting, I love my Southern Jumbo Special with the small burst and with 12 frets clear. I wouldn't want all my guitars that way though.

I'd been planning on buying a true vintage J45 until I saw Keb Mo Bluesmasters on Musicians Friend this past weekend - 2 open boxes for only $1599. Tried for a frustrating 5 minutes to add EITHER to my cart, and kept being told at checkout that the items were unavailable. Saw three listings on eBay pop up for the same guitar for $1599 ("used") with MusiciansFriend as the seller and a BuyItNow option - bought it outright!

Emailed a quick question to them after it hadn't shipped three days later, and was told my "order has been canceled as the item is no longer available". Waiting for my refund to go through. There IS one on the site now for $1999, though. So...who knows whether Musicians Friend really has any of these guitars, and/or whether they're willing to sell them to you at the price advertised.

Maybe a blessing and I should just stick with my original plan. But ah I'd have enjoyed reaching for that small blues guitar casually while on the couch at night, etc, at such a low price.

Redwine - that sux. However, if you really want the guitar, I would call them. I would bet money they will give you whatever they have and honor the advertised price ($1599). Actually anytime you want to buy anything of value on MF, I would automatically call them and tell them you are looking for a cheaper price, and ask them what they can do....

Redwine, take a look at themusiczoo.com. Not sure what features you were most interested in w/the J45TV, but they have a beautiful used ('15)J45 Red Spruce, vos finish at a very fair price. I bought my RS J45 through them and they were great to deal with. My bet you could do better than the MF price, if you are ok with used. Good luck in your hunt!

I really like E.M. Shorts guitars in Wichita, KS (www.wichitaband.com). I don't think they can be beat for price, and their service is great, too. Lance is whom I've worked with, and he's fantastic, phone or e-mail. Their regular discount price for a Gibson is probably lower than Musician's Friend's lowest scratch n dent or whatever else. Usually it is 40% off the retail price (not the MAP), but it seems like they go even lower than 40% discount.

Well, Zomby, if I can't ever find a newer Gibson I like with a 1.69 nut and comfortable neck profile, I appear to be out, too. I'm now debating whether or not to keep my J200. As much as I love her, the huge body isn't that comfortable for me. I'd love a J-45 instead. Or maybe I should look into carbon-fiber guitars and give myself a break from obsessing on humidity.

Is the nut on your J-200 1.69"? I think I saw a Gibson CL-10 on Reverb with a 1.69". It's not new though. :) For some reason I thought it was a small, short-scale guitar, but it seems to be closer to J-size. 1.69" nut would have killed it for me either way (not that I was interested, just browsing!)

However, buying a sunburst J-200 with a 1.725" nut from a forumite someday would not be out of the question.

Posted

For the record, my 2011 J-200 measures out at 1-11/16" (1.69), which is likely the reason I've preferred it over my modern day Bird, Dove, SJ, Sheryl Crow CW and Jackson Browne. Oddly enough, despite the JB having the widest nut, the neck cut and profile made it easier to get around than the others mentioned.

You can also see how many times I've tried to find a Gibson that comforted me. The ones I've kept are the '60s models, Bird, LG0, LG1 and LG3. I love their tone and look. I'd love to add a J-45 to the stable.

When it comes to nut width I am out of luck with Gibsons as I prefer a 1 15/16" or 1 7/8". But that is a preference and not a deal breaker. I can play with guitar with a 1 3/4" nut with no trouble. It just takes a bit of time to adjust when moving between guitars. I am GAS free because whenever I am thinking about buyng another guitar I ask myself would I would be willing to trade one I own for it. For a lot of years now the answer has been the same - no.

There was a time though when I was planning on selling or trading away my 1960 J-200. Nothing to do with sound but I am not a fan of the skinny neck carve. It won a reprieve when I met my future wife who fell head over heels in love with the guitar and claimed it as her own.
