Cougar Posted June 28, 2016 Share Posted June 28, 2016 I own a bunch of old Epiphones - some of the oldest shown in the picture below, from left to right: 1932 Zenith, 1933 Olympic, 1931 Adelphi Mandolin, 1935 Blackstone, 1940 Triumph..... Wow, thanks for posting, Felix! Amazing condition on those old guitars. My dad played his (now thoroughly nicked up) 1939 Zenith for years and years. zombywoof Posted July 17, 2016 Share Posted July 17, 2016 A couple of weeks ago I took in another one - an in much need of some TLC 1953 Triumph Regent. It is all clamped up at the moment and I am hoping to finish taking care of the binding issues tomorrow. Then it will just be slapping on the hardware and I will see where I stand. Papawooly Posted July 28, 2016 Share Posted July 28, 2016 Just wondering who else out there has an older Epiphone Acoustic? My PR 350 is 24 years old and sounds amazing. It has held up great over the years with no repairs needed. Besides the great sound, it also has some very nice finishes including chrome tuners and mother of pearl inlays on the fret board and head stock. I have been tempted to "upgrade" now that I can afford a more expensive acoustic but the few times I have gone to the local music store and played a Martin or Taylor, they just don't sound or feel any better than my Epi. Have a Casino made by Peerless in 2003 and a Riviera made by Unsung in the early 2000's...everything else is newer. Another Sheraton II from 2007, an Elitist Casino from about 2012 and a ES 335 PRO from 2015...a few Epiphone acoustics, too, all from the 00's. Skeet1 Posted September 2, 2018 Share Posted September 2, 2018 I have 3 SQ 180's (the Don Everly model); 91, 94 and 06. The quality decreased as the models got newer. The 91 is in mint condition and per a former Gibson historian and web page manager who has seen the production runs was built in the Bozeman plant using solid tone woods (spruce top, maple back and sides). Neck made in Korea, which at that time per federal regs made its being labeled "Made in Korea" mandatory. It is a hell of a guitar and much fun to play and my "go to." The 94 is all laminate, and was made in Korea, but it is still a nice guitar and plays well (especially after I lowered the action and replaced the nut, bridge and pins with bone/tusq). It was my first acoustic, and I'll always keep it The 06 isn't worth discussing. Main difference between my 91 and a Gibson J 180 is the neck. Epi is narrower at 1.65" at the nut whereas the J-180 is 1.75". I have small hands, so I love the neck. My luthier said it reminds him of the late 50's and early 60's Les Paul necks. Buying a Gibson J-180 is no problem for me, but when I play one, then play my 91 SQ 180, my Epiphone sounds as good if not better (again, I got it in mint condition). Can't bring myself to pay about $3K plus when what I have sounds great and fits my hands. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
