MorrisrownSal
Hey guys, Four hours last night... Here are two songs... recorded on iphone... lots of crown noise. What ya think? I think next time I will try recording out from the PA into a recorder, even thought you lose the crown noise.... https://soundcloud.com/sal-from-chatham/drift-away https://soundcloud.com/sal-from-chatham/nobody-knows-you

62burst
Never underestimate the potential of a well-lubricated crowd. And that can work both ways, as demonstrated by drunk guy "helping you out" with the lyrics on Nobody Knows You... But you know it's working when they're singing along- so much so when you can pull off the stop playing, and let the audience take over-part on Drift Away. "Mike" might've been over-selling the vocals there, but it's easy to get caught up. One does get caught up. The recording location could be adjusted a little if you wanted to change the level of audience/ambient sound, but the iPhone worked just fine to get the message across. Nicely done, and it sounds like a good time was had by all.
Motherofpearl
Sal that was awsome! Who's the singer? Great voice
AnneS
Sounds good, Sal! Fun stuff. An advantage to a Zoom vs iPhone, imo, is the Zoom lets you "point" toward your sound source; and you can widen or narrow the field. So you still get the ambient sounds, but it won't be at the same levels as what you're pointing at. And, it's at least as simple to use. Here's an example; there was plenty of bar noise, but it's more in the background, even though the Zoom was on a table top near the front: https://soundcloud.com/anne-rachel/keep-my-peace-live (Where I snuck a somber song into the set...) MorrisrownSal
Thanks guys. Mike McLaughlin sings 2/3 of the songs as lead, with me doing the harmony. I sing lead on the other third... Typically softer stuff. Jason Isbell. Stills. And even Johnny Cash. I sing the harmonies in his songs too. Mike has that "rock" voice.

flatbaroque
Sal,you guys are sounding really good. And the crowd sounds enthused, engaged and enjoying themselves.Nice one. Some good advice from Anne about a more targetted recording device that still gets the crowd sound.

MorrisrownSal
I'll take your tips, Anne. Thank you. Also, over the past two years you all have been so supportive for me. You guys gave me the confidence to play out after a quarter century away. I know full well that we are hacks (or I am anyway), but this outlet is important for me, and I'm digging the journey. My kids are older, and I am adjusting to life where not everything is about the kids. So thank you. This forum is like no other, and I love you guys. Oh, one more aside, I am gelling with Mike real well. We are writing together as well, and I hope to share a few of those with you in a few months. duluthdan
That soured really fun - the crowd noise stuck my listening vantage point right at one of tables up front - terrific stuff .
dchristo
that was great Sal, I would love to hear the same set without the crowd
Avery
Great stuff, but we need to hear some with you doing lead vocals. You're too good to just be doing harmony.
EuroAussie
Faboulous Sal, you guys combine really well. I think you found a really good partner, he has an absolutely top notch voice and one that is quite diverse and can be easily adapted to much material. Hold on to him. I like the crowd noise, its what makes a live perofrmance 'live' its part of the character and personality of the recording, altough agree would have been good to have them perhaps quieter. I agree with Ann that getting Zoom would be a great opportunity to get that balance. I use the Zoom Q4 and you saw from the my recent recordings it captures the sound brilliantly but also has features like reduction of ambient noise .... and most importantly has video, so we could see you ! Lastly, you seem to have a supportive and active bar to play in where the folks get into it and appreciate the tunes. Thats the good thing with American (and Latin) crowds, they get into the music and are appreciative after each song and clap along. Here in Prague Czech crowds can be a bit more reserved and blaze, need to work hard to get their support, but we always do in the end, its part of the challenge. Give us a vid next time Sal ! MorrisrownSal
EA, I may go out an buy one... Thanks Here are three I sang: Cover Me Up opened the show, because its slow and our whole deal kind of is designed to build, and Ventura Highway was somewhere in the middle. as is Old No. 7 https://soundcloud.c...-at-stone-house https://soundcloud.c...-at-stone-house https://soundcloud.com/sal-from-chatham/old-no-
Avery
Stellar stuff, Sal, you've got a wonderful voice. Your partner's got the rock sound, but the softer stuff you do really does it for me.
Cougar
Here are two songs... recorded on iphone... lots of crowd noise. What ya think? Excellent playing, Sal. These new-fangled phones are pretty amazing. But I'm thinking that's too much "crowd" in the mix. There's obviously a lot of folks having a great time, which is a good thing, but most seem to be off in their own discussion, doing their own thing and are, in a sense, disrespectful of the music, which is certainly good enough to deserve their attention. So yeah, I think you want to record right out of the PA. If that sounds too "sterile," you could do both, then sync up the two. As a separate track, you'd have control over the volume of the crowd noise.
