SCTX_Hacker Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 I am looking at getting my first "good" guitar, and I had pretty much settled on the J-45. However, I have always liked the SJ, and my understanding is that it is basically a more ornate version of the J-45. I ran across a new Southern Jumbo Modern Classic at Sweetwater and I have some questions about the model. First - is this a new model released again for 2016? I have not seen it anywhere but Sweetwater. Second - Does anyone have experience with the older Modern Classic versions? I am an intermediate guitar player at best, and I basically play at home and maybe with friends from time to time, so this is the very top of my budget. However I plan on having this for the next 40 years so I would love any input you folks can offer. Thanks for the help.
modoc_333 Posted December 11, 2015 Posted December 11, 2015 The SJ is a limited guitar from November of this year. The first nice acoustic I ever bought was a Southern Jumbo Modern Classic. It was a fine guitar and really turned me onto Gibson acoustics as a whole. Keith
SCTX_Hacker Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 Well I put my faith in Sweetwater, and they delivered BIG TIME. I ordered the Southern Jumbo Modern Classic, and it is gorgeous Sounds great too, well as great as my playing can make her sound..... If anyone has worries about dealing with Sweetwater, all I can say is they were more than accommodating and had excellent customer service.
MorrisrownSal Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 I owned a Southern Jumbo True Vintage. I own a J50 Modern Classic, and I own a J45 Standard (2016) The Southern Jumbo Modern Classic is likely a J45 Standard, essentially. IE, same exact top, back, sides, neck, and tuners (grover rotos?). My guess is that it has the batwing pick guard, and inlays on the fretboard, and that those are the only real differences. I am guessing that the new Modern Classics you are looking at also have the plekked necks, and rolled fretboard sides. I bet its a great guitar. WHoops...edited here to add that I see you bought it! Sorry my response was late. Congratulations!
BigKahune Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 . Glad to hear your internet SJ purchase turned out well. J45/SJ is a good choice - the Sitka and hog sound great and a short scale to boot. Congrats. . B) .

Sorry my response was late. Congratulations! You are right on your assumptions. The neck is a lot more friendly for my embarrassingly small hands than the J-45 (2015) that I played at GC. She really is a beaut!
Rambler Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 I think it will fill the bill. Play it as well as you can for as long as you like.
jt Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Congratulations! Play it in good health. I've got two (1943) SJs. IMHO, a better guitar has not been made.
fortyearspickn Posted December 19, 2015 Posted December 19, 2015 Welcome to the club! You will find, over time, that this was one of the best decisions you've ever made. A better guitar will make you a better player. Some say - a better person! G'Luck.
