2002 Gibson Les Paul Special: Unusual Headstock

I recently came across this 2002 Gibson Les Paul Special. Its head stock is unlike any other that I've been able to find. The Les Paul signature doesn't exist. Is this a legitimate Gibson Les Paul Special? As far as I can tell, the rest of the guitar seems correct.

The seller is a second owner. In the time he's owned it, he hasn't had any peghead plate work done. It's certainly possible that the previous owner did.

 

Does anyone see any other discrepancies on this guitar that should cause me to be cautious?
