Greetings. I'm hoping someone may be able to either confirm or deny my suspicions. From what I've been able to research through the web, I suspect that this is a 1939 L-50. The ser# EG-7271 corresponds to the year and online photos reinforce suspicions. Haven't taken a tape measure to it yet for body sizes.

I've had it for at least 50 years and it belonged to my grandfather before that. I haven't played it in at least 30, been cased in a closet. I'm at a point in life where I question why I continue to sit on it, and am thinking of selling, but need to confirm what it is. I replaced a broken bridge and the tuners that wouldn't hold tune years ago, other than that it's in great shape.

Any help appreciated.

If it's a 16" body width, I would say you are correct on year and model. Unfortunately, these don't have a lot of value these days--probably not much over $1000, if that. Yours looks to be in good condition, and has a great case.

I hope you kept the original tuners, which should go with the guitar if you sell it.

Thanx for the confirmation of my conclusions. Na, the tuners, I'm afraid are, looooong gone. I'll break it back out of the closet tomorrow and measure it.

High-quality repro tuners are readily available, and the aren't that expensive. If you keep the guitar, you might go that route. They won't impact in any meaningful way on value, since they are so easily replaced.

It's worth saying that all arch-top guitars, particularly Gibson, are really low in value these days. If this was a new guitar being built, it would be at least 2500 bucks.

It's a GOOD time to buy arch-tops.

Value could very well go up, but if and when, wouldn't be able to tell.

I have a small rectangular piece of plastic in my wallet that says I'm ready to own an L-5. Just looking for something that is neither a closet queen nor has been sawed in half and hot-glued back together.

Wow, this statement even makes me excited.

If you find yourself with any specific questions, shoot me a PM.

No, please, not PM but share it with us!

I can't afford an L-5, but I sure do get happy seeing another buy one.

I'm totally into it.
