capmaster Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 On January 4th, 1986, a good two years after the split-up of Thin Lizzy and while pursuing a solo career, Phil Lynott died in a hospital in Salisbury, England, due to kidney failure, pneumonia and terminal heart failure. As a Thin Lizzy fan from my teenage years on, it came to me as a shock. His songwriting as well as his vocal and bass playing styles are influencing me still today. I thought I link some videos here in memoriam of this great artist.
pippy Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Whilst it came as a shock it wasn't really much of a surprise. I'd seen him in an intreview on television shortly (I think? It was a long time ago) before his death and he looked to be in a terrible state. From what I can remember the interviewers were prepared to cancel the interview but Phil Lynott wanted to warn young people about the very real dangers of drug & alcohol abuse to which he had succumbed and so the interview went ahead as planned. It was very sad to see him so ill. Greatly missed. I'll post this. One of my favourite Lizzy songs given a really nice makeover. Gary playing his 5-string Pea Green Les Paul; Pip.
capmaster Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 ... Gary playing his 5-string Pea Green Les Paul ... Pip. To me it looked like he had broken the Big E string because it still was wiggling around.
capmaster Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 Here are some more of my Thin Lizzy favorites:
saturn Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Hmmm. All these years I've been thinking that he committed suicide. Sad either way. Another misconception I had was that I used to think he was from New Jersey.
IanHenry Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Sadly missed, Phil really was the wild one. I saw them once, they were great, I think it was about the time they had Snowy White on guitar. Ian
'Scales Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 it can't be 30 years since 1986 Five years since Gary left the stage too.
sellen Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Could upload all day long, i got at least 30 songs i really like with thin lizzy What i really like with lizzy is the big music universe, so much different stuff. IanHenry Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Seems kind of appropriate to play this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F5lmCQX32g Ian
AndyK Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I remember hearing the news on the radio that he was in hospital. A few days later he was gone. There will never be another like him.
Johnny 6 String Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Love Lizzy, tons of great tunes, beautiful guitar work. Always loved the twin guitar work. Lots of posts of their rockers, but this was a fun song and a personal fav. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHA3EZHvSWg Edit: Embedding worked! Thanks Rabs
capmaster Posted January 8, 2016 Author Posted January 8, 2016 Phil created some awesome bass lines. "Dancing in the Moonlight" is one of my favorites, and this next one, too. It icludes a second bass for fretless tones: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhd8G_8LuJ8

Also Phil had a great way with articulating his lyrics, he created beautiful imagery. Simple lines like "I like the way her lipstick matches the carnation on his lapel" for a quick example from above.
