I have been avoiding facebook...

Really don't like it but everyone keeps telling me I need a facebook page for my business... (groan)

So I decided today to go have a look and guess what, you cant have a business page without having a personal page first (groan)...

Yet I really have no desire what so ever to have a personal page...

But since ive never actually used it, I thought id ask on here..

If I were to make a personal page is it possible to then totally hide it from the public searches? Ive read online both yes and no to that question (conflicting net advice, theres a shock [rolleyes] ).. Some say its not totally possible to be private and some say it is if you use certain privacy settings?

So what do you facebook users say?

EDIT... ok so I went and did it.. here it is, all comments welcome as usual.. And what do I have to say?? Oh yeah, please friend/like me or what ever it is you do on there :)

I quit fb a long time ago. Can't stand it.

It has limited merit in that I was able to reconnect with old friends but I really can't

stand nor do I care to hear about what people do every 5 minutes or see pics of what the hell they are eating.

My experience back when I had it was that yes you can set your profile so you can control who sees you but

every stupid update fb did changed my settings so I had to go back in and filter everything out again.

I have no idea what it is like now nor do I care. Good luck with it.

Yup. B.S. Used to be easier to create a "shell account" to have your business page. Now you can't as easily. I don't think anyone "needs" a facebook page, but that's what marketing is these days. Venues actually look to see how many followers you have on facebook to see if they are willing to book you.

This is the thing.. its not about need so much as just trying to get your name out there (businesswise)... and so everyone tells me, that's one way to do it..

Still the whole thing just makes me groan out loud.....

If I cant create a totally private account then I really may just not do it... I really don't want silly friend requests from people I don't know or don't want to know.. or constant updates about what people had for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

People fukking around on facebook all day are not going to be good customers.

Rabs, you're smart.

Maybe you can make Facebook work for you.

And you control what is on your personal page.

Just think of it as part of the game.

Generally though, I think Facebook is stupid, and some people who use facebook are stupid.

My son met a nice young lady and introduced me to her.

I looked her up on facebook and her name there was, "Miss Behave!"

Since then, she has reconnected with her old boyfriend and is trying to drink less.

I'm sure glad my son dodged that bullet.

I understand employers are looking at the Facebook pages of job applicants.

It tells a whole different story than the resume they sent in.

"Here's a picture of me throwing up last night when I was out with my friends. I was so pissed I missed the toilet. Oops. lol."

FB is social media. This forum is social media. I use FB, i just dont put anything on it that I would not put on a bilboard along a random highway. It is what you make it to be.

Ohh, I have good reason for not liking facebook...

But that's neither here nor there...

Does anyone know about my main question as to if you can have a private profile or not?

No, but it would be nice to see a picture of your cat.

I'm not sure that you can have a FB page with access banned for everyone but it doesn't really matter; as J.4knee said just a bit earlier it's what you choose to do with it that counts.

I have a FB page. I haven't used it for perhaps a year. I don't get bombarded by stupid messages - perhaps three or four messages a day which I ignore - nor do I have to update it all the time. It just sits there doing nothing.

My wife has one much the same but, and this is the point, she also has a FB page which she needs for her work and the only people who can access it are fellow professionals.

In this respect it's possible to have a Private FB a/c and a Work FB a/c and to keep them totally separate.

This is what you need; one a/c which you never use and ignore and another for your business.

I use FB. It's ok, but I find that outside of friends if you comment on a story the trolls come out and attack your comment. I'm on guitar pages on there and if there is a video a user has posted, if you comment on their vibrato being bad etc you get so much hate. So, you have to be careful what you put.

On a positive side. I've met friends from my childhood. Got back in contact with my first girlfriend (lost my cherry to her)and we're good friends now. Then there is all of the people I've met and gone to gigs with and have been nice to know. So. FB etc is what you make of it and how you use it. You can get work from it and it's good for research and reviews.

Almost. Never post and never accept a friend request. I had the same thing, been a Facebook member longer than most. Only started to use it just before Christmas.

Give us a bell mate, I can help a lot with this stuff.

You can have a facebook page set up to be visable only for your FB friends. If you then don't add any friends, it will be totally invisible.

FB today is a greater webb traffic provider than Google, meaning that whether you like it or not, FB can be important for any business.

I only started using it recently & created a page for Blown Out (my main band).

I was assured that you only need put stuff on there that you want people to know. There are indeed private (your contacts) & public settings. I dont use it much at all. Seems to work ok.

Annoyingly it used to be much easier, and you could sign up to it as a business, without needing the personal account first. Then of course they had to go and f**k up a good thing.

What Robert said. You don't need to be active on Facebook personally to have your business on there. And you'd be surprised how much exposure you get without really having to put in much effort. I don't really know whether it's really worth it but I have a way of missing the boat on stuff, so I wouldn't know anyway.

I don't see the harm in having a FB account. I guess the issue is the difference between having one, and using one.

As has been said, what you choose to put on there is up to you. I have one, and I have virtually nothing on there except my name. It was like that for years, and only lately have I started using it. But that's private. hehe.

I might add, I don't have pics on there just like here.

facebook is pretty benign if you keep your settings locked donw, don't post stuff you don't need to, and don't accept friend requests out of the blue.

the problem with facebook, is the same problem with liquor, do it right, it's pretty harmless, abuse it, and it can create a mess.

Facebook annoys me. that being said, i'm on it, and that periodically annoys me. i tell myself i need to, to promote the couple of bands i'm in. i've deleted my account several times. if you can avoid FB, do so. it's stupid. it's a huge waste of time. alot of political crap on there. and alot of bogus videos.

My wife holds a masters in computers and education. I asked her your question and her response was NO! Then she thought about it and said No, she didn't think so but she didn't know for sure, but didn't think so.

yea Doug, you're right, every 4years facebook goes crazy with political posts, I ignore it..

I think social media and politics is like mixing talking religion with the extended family at thanksgiving.

no matter how hard one tries to keep it light, that is going down the tubes eventually.

I will say though, I've seen some of the most hilarious stuff I've ever seen from Facebook posts.

Since I don't post a lot of stuff, and never get into the shenanigans, I find the entertainment value of popping in there now and then is worth the price of admission

if you can stay pretty neutral it's not as annoying as it can be.

Some people seriously need to install some dumba$$ filters tho.. that's for sure.

I wish you luck with it Rabs. I can't stand it. I am technically a member of some "groups" but never go there. I have to admit that I would never use Facebook to look up a business. I'd use Google!

I have got a very minimal private Faceache page and that's the way it'll stay. I sometimes get messages saying "You have 14 "notifications" (eh?), or Billy Bloggs "updated his status" (bully for him) and the irritating "update your profile" (I think they have given up on me for that one).

I'm just old. I come from the time when deleting email you weren't told rubbish like "15 conversations deleted" (conversations? spam?) or "you have 10 Friends" (friends? When I've never met them?).

I'm just old and tired... [crying]

Ray,

yep. I usually just post silly stuff. my oldest daughter puts ALL her business out there. drives me crazy. my wife put off opening a FB account for years, but now she's hooked. she's on it all the time.
