Finding that next Gibson

I was cruising a local pawn shop that has a sizable guitar inventory and noticed a 2009 Les Paul Traditional (026490449)in fairly good condition, and they are asking $1,400. I'm a lefty, and was not personally interested in this right-hand version, but it made me wonder what guitars might be out there in the wilderness of mom and pop stores, and how would we ever discover them. What if your local shop had that precious lefty gold-top Les Paul I've been looking for?

I know this shop does not use EBay, and this Les Paul and their 4 or 5 Epi's might sit there for years, unplayed.

Any thoughts on sharing these kinds of finds on this board somewhere?

I know a lot of folks bash Guitar Center, but the easiest and most comprehensive collection of used gear can be easily weeded through using the "Used" tab at the top of Guitar Centers website. Helps to stop in at all the local stores and pawn shops regularly to see and know what is moving through them, but GC will ship the item dirt cheap and you have 30 days no questions asked if you aren't happy with your purchase. Their prices can be excellent as well.

There's good reason to bash GC, but the lack of knowledge they display can often turn up great bargains in their used selections.

I recently scored a truly cool pre Joe Pass Korean Epiphone Emperor with case for under $400.00. They had it listed as "Epiphone Single Cut." If I hadn't seen the photo listing I wouldn't have had any idea what they were selling.

I've bought a few used guitars from them online, and so far only ever had to return one. I always expect the instruments will need serious cleaning, new strings and a few hours setting it up properly, but good deals still can be found.

That's easy! The last mom and pop closed up December 31st, so there is Guitar Center and nothing else for a good 50 miles north and west, and the entire rest of the state south, another good 50 miles. Problem solved Woo Hoo!
