Favorite unexpected artistic moments

Hello All!

 

I am just curious what unexpected acts You remember with joy. Strange performances, albums, guest appearances from an artist who broke out of His/Her box for a moment of adventure or joke.

 

Things, like Ozzy singing with Kim Basinger on a Was not was song. Of course, recalling more serious performances are appreciated too, if not more.

 

For me, it's when I found out how great Tony Martin sings the blues on the Forcefield II record. Prior to that, I only knew Him after His work with Black Sabbath.

I believe Frank Spencer and Gomer Pyle, despite rather odd speaking voices, had great singing voices. [smile]

 

 

Also, that Lemmy got to sing Silver Machine (Hawkwind's biggest song?) in spite of others in the band wanting it... because he was the only one who could hit the high notes [blink]

This is not quite the same as "guess who suddenly came out on stage" because I have a lot of those (as I'm sure many other forum members do).

 

In 1999 I went to see the Joe Zawinul Syndicate for 3 nights in a row at Ronnie Scott's club....he even signed the CDs for me.

 

I think it was the 2nd night that they were playing one of the more relaxed numbers and he suddenly started playing the bassline and then the 1st 2 lines of melody to "Black Market" over the groove.....

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up - there was a communal gasp from the audience, and then it was gone, he didn't develop it.

Magic.

 

For another type of unexpected moment; probably around 1979-81, Ry Cooder at Hammersmith Odeon with his very fine 'Borderline' band....he dropped his guitar!

 

Sure I could think of a few more.....

Ahh man.. I saw BB King a few years back.... And well his performance was a bit strange, more talking than playing but it was cool, like an evening with......

 

But then later on he brought the guests out and man was I not expecting that.. we has Slash, Ronnie Wood, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and errrm Mick Hucknall... And boy oh boy what a shock that was... I spent the next hour or so with a giant smile on my face just listening to them jam and was buzzing from it for days.. Awesome..

 

Then there was a gig I went to once.. I cant even remember who the main act was.. But in support was Edgar Winter (Johnnys brother), I had never heard of him before that and boy what a show he put on.. Just amazing.... And he looks just like his brother with the long straight white hair played several different instruments during the gig and had one of the tightest bands ive ever seen... then the main act came on and was so bad compared to Edgar that I actually left early.

 

And not so much related but I love this video clip.. Totally unexpected...

At Byron a few years back watching Seasick Steve who we'd caught onto his music during the previous year. Good in itself, then out walks (the) John Paul Jones. We are like "holy **** - a real live Led Zeppelin dude!!!!!!!!!"

 

Found out later they do that regularly enough, but having a Zep man in our locale was pretty special for us colonial yokels! [biggrin]

For me it was during a John McLaughlin concert with Shakti in the early 2000 in Montreal Jazz Festival.

At some point John was shredding a very intense moment (we all know how fast he can be) and the stage monitor just blew up beside him and you could see the smoke coming out of it.

Funny part is he then stops playing for a couple seconds saying : "too many notes" lol
