Ed Zeplin Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I traded PRS SE Santana and small 5W Fender tube amp for this sexy guitar. With a Christmas gift card thrown in it cost me $5 and change out of pocket. Loving the guitar but it has a high fret that dampens the note across the board at the 13th fret. I found this when I lowering the action during a setup at home. The truss rod is also stuck (wouldn't budge either way and I didn't want to force it) so I brought it back for warranty service and a complete setup. May as well have them break the truss rod than me. I miss it already, should take about two weeks
sparquelito Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 YOU are a guitar addict. Just like me, and many of the others on this website. Bravo!!
Col Mustard Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Congratulations on getting an excellent Epiphone... proud frets are not too unusual IMHO... humidity and temperature play hell with the wood in nearly any guitar. Who knows how long it sat in warehouse in China, and/or how long it was rocking and rolling in the hold of a rusty tub of a freighter hauling musical gear from Shang Hai to where ever. A decent luthier ought to be able to level the frets properly during a setup job. I bought myself one of these about nine months ago, and I'm still head over heels for this guitar. I have other instruments I play of course, but the ES-339 P-90 pro is my first P-90 equipped instrument and I'm still working my way into all the nuances of this tone. I like the size and the feel of this Epi. I like the neck a lot. Mine's been modded in some crucial ways (for me) and the ES-339 responded very well to upgrades. It's now a real player. I bought the Blonde version. I loved the look of the black P90s on the maple body. Mine has a varnished mahogany neck, which looks stunning from the rear of the guitar, to my eye anyway. Audience would seldom see it, but I know it's there. It's just one little detail I didn't know I would like so well. *grins ...I took a green kitchen scouring pad to the back of the neck, and that dulled the shine of the Polyurethane so that my left hand really likes playing around on it. It feels great. Mods I did to my ES-339 are: Gotoh Black Tuners, Tusq black nut, Gotoh black Bridge and Tail, Black Tele style dome knobs and a hand carved (by me) pickguard made of Ebony headstock veneer from StewMac. I haven't touched the electronics (yet) because this Epiphone sounds great so far, and has given no trouble in the Jack, Switch or pots. It's curious to me that the Chinese P-90s sound as good as they do. 1940s technology, still giving great service in two thousand effing sixteen. Pretty amazo. The Blonde maple guitar looks great with the black hardware IMHO. http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/127469-ngd/#entry1729401 And I'm in love with the small size of this 'semi-hollow" body guitar. To me, it's a solid body guitar with a couple of air spaces ventilated by F-holes. Mine weighs just over 7lb, lighter than my Tele but heavier than my SGs. I was surprised at how heavy it is for a 'hollow' body, and decided that it's really NOT a hollow body (like a Casino), but a regular electric guitar. Go figure. No feedback problems. Solid center block. I like the binding on the neck and body, I like the fit and finish. I spent almost a hundred bucks extra to get an Epiphone hard case for it. But they gave me a really good deal on the guitar, and I like it well enough to be sure I want it in a hard case. Anyway, congratulations again. I hope that your warranty work turns your new Epi into an excellent instrument.
merciful-evans Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 hi Zeplin, I had a similar truss rod experience with my Casino Coupe, which I mentioned on here. There was nothing wrong with the it, but it took the neck more than a day to respond. It did move in the end. I now know that if I make any adjustment, I then leave it for 36 hours, before checking it. Works ok. One of the techs on here told me of this. Sorry I cant recall which one. Hope it comes back just the way you want it anyway.
SmokeyGhost Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 New member here. I also have an Epiphone ES339 P90 pro but in Sunburst. It's just sweet, the finish is of high quality (and I am able to compare that quality with my Gibson Les Paul Studio Pro 2014)and I do like the variety of tones you can get out of it. For the money, it is an exceptional guitar and I have absolutely no issues with it. As an aside, I also have currently have: Epiphone Dot Epiphone Les Paul PlusTop Pro (love it) Epiphone SG 400 Pro Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin Gretsch G5135 PRS SE Single Cut Trem PRS SE One Korina Squire Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster Butterscotch Blond Fender Deluxe Player's Stratocaster Cole Clarke FL3AC Taylor GS Mini-e Martin GPCPA4 Maton Custom Shop Maton EM325C Tanglewood TW47E Seagull S6 Original QI Alhambra 7C
SmokeyGhost Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I went slightly mad today and bought a Yamaha THR10C (already had a THR5A) for the fun of it. I know this is unlikely but did Epiphone deliberately attempt to match the P90's of the ES339 to the THR? Dang, it sounds great!
