So I've heard mixed reviews on the A.J.'s with maple back and sides. I saw this Gibson Custom Shop 1 of 65 made Iron Mountain A.J.'s on Guitar Center's website on Closeout the other night. They had been selling this model for $3000 and now they had one on clearance for $1399. I am a sucker for a bargain so I pulled the trigger. It turned out it was the last one in their nation wide inventory and was at my local store so I picked it up yesterday, and played it out tonight. All I can say is WOW!!! The sound is powerful and articulate. very well balanced and it sustains wonderfully. I also love the looks. I think I have a new favorite. I really didn't think I was going to enjoy this one so much. There were multiple guitars and players tonight, and this one made this very average player stand out. Thank you Gibson for a very special instrument!

Here's my girls : 2014 Iron Mountain, 2015 J-45, and 2015 J-35 and I do love them all, but the Iron Mountain is just extra special!

Beautiful guitars! I like how the burst on the AJ differs from the J-45.

Tell us more about how the tone differs from the others.

Man o' man, that's one helluva great deal.

Love the burst - she's a beauty. And quite the trio of Gibby slopes you've got there.

Congrats and enjoy. . B)

Great looking guitar. I'm sure it sounds as good as it looks. Plus, you stole it at that price. Guess I'm gonna have to start checking GC Closeouts more closely..... [rolleyes]

No doubt about it that was one heck of a deal. Gibson's "Limited Editions" do come up on clearance so it is worth keeping an eye peeled. I remember several years back that pricey limited edition "reproduction" of Johnny Winter's Firebird was on closeout also for about 50% off. It is my understanding that dealers are required to purchase a fairly high volume of guitars each year and you cannot count leftover stock.

Looks like you got a splendid deal on a sweet guitar. You really can't go wrong with an AJ. Real boomers. I particularly like the burst. Very similar to the one on my Koa AJ. I don't think you'll have a problem with the maple. A bit different tone from the traditional rosewood AJ, but likely lots of sustain and depth to it. The Koa is brighter than my rosewood AJ, but just as loud. Just different tones. I suspect yours also has the Adi top. Lots of volume with a great response to gentle fingerpicking. Enjoy.

Well, you scored BIG TIME on that AJ-maple!! That is spectacular!

This is one of my favourite body-and-wood combinations. I am biased, since I have played a few other slope shoulders in maple, both in long scale (AJ) and short scale variants. And I own a maple SJ in that configuration, with a red spruce top: it is one of may favourite modern Gibsons. It has a similar burst to yours:

But it cost way more than yours!

Enjoy your AJ.
