So today, once again I'm wondering... as I often do, What the heck people who are not musicians do with their copious free time?

I've been playing music since I was a kid, from the time I was 10 / 11 years old, there is RARELY a day to go by that I haven't spent at least an hour and half to two hours, playing "something"... fir many years just guitar, but during the last 12 years also piano. I can't imagine NOT doing this everyday, can't wrap my head around my life, not with Music as a huge piece of every day.

How does the other half (even) live? what a miserable existence it must be ! :)

Tv, movies, sports.

My happy hour group at work spends tons of time on fantasy football, every time we go out I enjoy my beers in silence and check out the ladies.

One of those guys made sure his honeymoon suite had ESPN. Enough said.

Another great way to absolutely kill all your free time is having kids.

My 3 closest friends are music oriented but they have 4, 4 and 3 kids respectively so we don't have a lot of time to jam or even see each other.

Ray,

I guess its different things for differnt people. my wifes obsession is gardening. like you, ever since i was 13 or 14, its been music / guitars. if i'm not playing guitar, i'm thinking about playing guitar, or talking about guitars or thinking about talking about guitars, or listening to music, or thinking about listening to music, or talking about music, or thinking about talking about music...

music almost consumes my every thought. i've been playing an instrument since I was 7. i have other loves, like Baseball & obsessions like Old Horror (like our buddy Joe), but the guitar... and now i'm closing in on 56. I wish i could turn the clock back and work 3 times harder at those 6 strings . i love guitars. i love music.

Most of them are watching TV.

I gave up television myself, over six years ago.

My TV literally does not come on all year until it is time for American football.

(Mostly NFL, but a little college ball too.)

And then it goes right back off and collects dust.

I would much rather be making music!

Yeah well I think we are all the same.. I mean I certainly don't spend all my time playing (and yes I probably should play more)...

But what gets me is more when people say they arnt in to music... Those people I feel sorry for, but im sure they all substitute it with something else.. Like getting in to sports, or collecting stuff or whatever takes up a few hours here and there.. Theres a million things a person could do...

But again yes, people who only stare at the box or go down the pub or work.. I don't get that.. Theres so much more to life. Everyone needs a hobby, something to aspire to.. Something you do with passion....

I am semi-retired. I work about 10 days a month or so. Since I got sick, I just can't do the travel, but because I have so much time, I spend it visiting rummage sales, building knives, those can be seen @ Turquoisetrailknives.com and alot of time with my 2 boys. But I will tell you, it took me a full 3 years to get used to all the xtra time I had on my hands. First I volunteered at a homeless shelter (until some lady with HIV spit on my face for not giving her a new mattress). THen the animal shelter, which is great, but pretty heavy, now I found my equilibrium. I live in a neighborhood where I get to see good live music every night of the week.

As for the rest of people, I see so many that stare lifelessly into their devices while the world passes em by. I don't know if I should feel bad or not. Kinda think this is like crack, it's a highly addictive devil put here by the man, but your own damn fault if you become addicted.

TV, smartphone/tablet, gaming, sport, eating, resting.....if you work full-time you follow a structure - get in from work, cook, eat, prepare whatever for next day, do any tasks and only after that is it 'me' time......I had over 38 years of that.

Being a parent - well as noted above that is a full-time job.

I see guys on my estate go to work, come home and start their next job which is Dad, and if you love your kids and want the best for them that's the whole focus for most people (as I'm sure it was for 'the kid' here otherwise he'd have been a HUGE star B) ).

I don't have kids and just completed my 1st year of retirement/redundancy. I play as much as possible now. But it is only too easy to spend hours on the net.

@JayinLA - I looked at the site - there was a knife thread on this forum recently - what's the veining or pattern effect on the blades?

How does the other half (even) live? what a miserable existence it must be ! :)...

Playing Devil's Advocate here, I admit, but Why Must it be Miserable?

My wife loves music but she spends much of her free time reading. She probably reads 2-300 books per year and has pretty good taste in literature. Second to that she is passionate about film and especially in seeking out films which DON'T make it to places like "Blockbuster". In the same way that there is a wealth of fantastic world-music which passes 'under the radar' there is a similar situation in the film industry.

My daughter plays piano and is passing up through the grades system. She also takes classes in Gamelan from a purely fun perspective but her biggest passions are reading (again) and dance. She currently takes courses in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz and Theatre Performance Class. All of those run on Saturday so that ties-up the start of the weekend. During the week she attends after-school clubs for badminton, art, design & technology and once a week is a rep. for the 'Student's Commission'. The other day after school she goes to the library.

Most Sundays we try to make good use of our membership of the National Trust and visit 'stuff'. Even if the weather is inclement there is always plenty to do and see. Fortunately for us there is a wealth of amazing places within, say, a 40 mile drive. Chartwell, Knole and Ightam Mote were the most recent 'discoveries'. Well worth a visit, one-and-all. Even closer to home there is High Elms Country Park which spreads over several hundred acres and feels like it's set far in the deepest countryside although it's only ten minutes away by car.

Personally I do try to play guitar every day. Most days it's just sitting down with the G-Jazzer for five minutes whilst my daughter finishes breakfast or else picking up a Lester to noodle unplugged during ad-breaks on those odd evenings when we sit down to watch something on the electric fish-tank. If I'm working from home I might strap-on a guitar whilst waiting for files to process/upload/transfer/whatever but free-time is in short supply hereabouts.

I actually plugged-in to the amp today for around half-an-hour. First time in a fortnight, I suppose. I mucked about with More-Than-the-Usual-Amount-of-Gain for a change. I even revisited Aerosmith's back catalogue. It was fun!

But as much as I'm a passionate guitarist I'm also a passionate photographer and if I'm not shooting for a client I sometimes wander off with my Leica to simply enjoy the 'just looking and observing' part of life.

Music is a HUGE part of my and my family's lives but there are also plenty of other things which flavour our day-to-day existence.

And I haven't even mentioned cooking and having friends around for dinner. Surely one of life's finest pleasures?!

Oh My! ! ! COOKING ! ! ! ! ! And WINE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Sorry if this all sounds far too smug but we are simply having a great life.

And gadgets don't even have to come into it...........this Forum apart, of course; I love you guys'n'girls....

I don't think that a lot of people (non musicians) have a 'copious' amount of free time...between full time jobs and feeding a family. Work, eat, sleep, can consume most of 24 hours.

For sure, much free time is spent in devices and TV and talking about the day with a spouse. Much time can be spent looking into a glass of bourbon as well.

playing music is a pastime for youth and single people...which all of us are not.

Different patina patterns asked for by customers. I do alot of playing with steels and etching. Poeple like that they can get a blade that has an asthetic look but not the Price that comes with demascus. I guess they're pretty blades for folks who plan on using them.

I get this. I can't imagine my life without the guitar either. My own career (teaching) is not music oriented but so much of the rest of my life is tied up in this six string obsession. However, I don't think it's necessarily a gaping hole for others. They've likely filled their own lives with other stuff that makes them happy.

Lots of great responses, the miserable existence comment was a bit toungue in check, I understand that people have full lives regardless of special interests and kids change everything.

And I certainly appreciate the fact that kids change all the rules.

I also do almost feel bad for people who have no interest in music or even know what they like, the just have other priorities.

I also don't watch a lot of tv... I like golf and photography but music eclipses almost everything

Aside from family and work which always comes first, the rest, well it's just stuff to do..

You talking about people who are working or retired from work. Working people are very busy. When I worked I spent 45 minutes driving to work, 10 hours hours at work and the 45 minute drive home. That pretty much shoots the day, then family, kids, yard work, ect. Days gone. Lots of times I worked double shifts. Retired non musicians? Tons of hobbies, not just music. Are they in sports? Olympics? Shooting competition? Race cars? Street Rods? Show cars? Shopping and buying stuff? Tons of stuff in collectors, I'm a chess set collector,I used to play in tournaments, gun collector, movie cd collector, wife is a bell collector, I know a baseball collector and has a business on the side, some start up other businesses after retirement or go to work someplace else. Children and grandkids always keep you busy. I used to drag race, show Dobermans, I know an antique furniture colector, I used to paint houses on the side, know other people who still do and I still do it for a select few. I've painted inside and out, have all the equipment still, I've done commercial offices, woodwork, apartments, ect. Women, my mother especially loves crocheting baby sitting still in her 80's, my wife used to be into cards, she was very good at it, like hallmark cards, now she is into quilting that keeps her busy. Young and old love working out. I still weight lift 3-4 days per week. I'm more into powerlifting then bodybuilding. Some love farming or gardening. I could take this a lot further and it could be endless with different interests for different folks. Can't talk religion here but I know many folks who spend 24-7 worshipping God. Some are clean freaks who spend all their time cleaning house. Yard work here in summer never gets done in a day. It takes me a week just to keep up. I often wonder how I ever found time to go to work!msp_flapper.gif Want more? Lol how about all the photographers here?

I knew one individual who had nothing to look forward too and didn't want to give up work to retire. After talking to him a few times, he did go and loved it. Glad he did too. I looked at his interests and added things for him to do. Music has been my whole life too, that radio or album was always going when I was very little. I grew up in the 50's and still love music from that era as well as the 60's and 70's. Some 80's stuff, then it gets pretty slim.

I stopped playing for over 20 years. But it never left my mind. I just worked harder. Then got divorced. She got the house, so it was all for nothing. 40 wasted years. My advice to any young person...Live your life for you, not others.

Some people are content to do nothing at all, sit on the couch or easy chair and watch TV… Some do drugs, some video games, some social media, some go to the gym, some go running, bicycling, motor bikes, cars, built models, fly kites, or now drones…etc There's lots to do, what ever makes you happy without hurting or infringing on others is good...

When about me, I could spend all of my life taking photographs, and even imagine making a living from it. Anyway, it came never close to it, and I think that costs for gear and the lots of chemistry including space consumption kept me from doing so.

I admire great professional photographs like our mate Pippy. Taking a look at the pictures he took of his guitars reveals his enormous talents and outstanding skills. Awesome how he's able to translate a guitar's look through picturing. This is definitely a challenging task. I'm in doubt if my talents were adequate to ever develop these qualities.

However, making music is my private top priority although I think I'm not better as a musician than I would be as photographer.

Besides music and still picture photography I'm interested in sciences, in particular to see through modern myths like Lambda CDM cosmology or elementary particle zoo. Any era creates fairy tales of its own, and the modern ones also burn billions of taxpayer money.

It's time for mankind to come to reason.
