SmokeyGhost Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I never watch the Academy Award's! What are they and what are the awards for?
kidblast Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 What are they and what are the awards for? a few hours worth of watching self entitled people with egos the size of Jupiter. you aint missing a thing.
sparquelito Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I am with Jaxson50. I don't watch the Oscars, and haven't for over ten years or so. The Oscars (okay, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) have no credibility with any discerning, intelligent movie-goer. We EACH of us vote for our most popular movies by going to the theaters and filling the seats. Period. What a bunch of jackasses (inside an in-bred inner-sanctum of leering, drooling, voting Academy members) have to say about what movies or actors are 'the best' matters not one iota to me. To the recent 'news story', I say this: Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith have a laughably-racist, 'whaaaa, look at me, pity me' agenda. Guess what? I'm not looking, and I have no pity.
Kenny V Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Just another vehicle to sell commercials. There is something wrong with putting actor, actresses, as well as sports stars on pedestals. They are gifted in their field but are not always the brightest bulbs in the package. Just listen to the Sean Penn interview on 60's minutes last Sunday, and I don't care who goes to or boycotts the Awards.
pippy Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I'm not sure they are even broadcast over here.......... I've certainly never watched them if they have been/are. Not because of some deeply-held beliefs; I'm simply just not interested in the slightest bit. I have heard of some of the results through the years, though. Pip.
jaxson50 Posted January 21, 2016 Author Posted January 21, 2016 Does anyone else remember back in the 50s when the show lasted 1 hour?
Rabs Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Yeah I think it is broadcast over here.. But I have always hated the Oscars.. Nothing but a bunch of poncy idiots patting themselves on the back for being so smug... They mean nothing in any real terms. Recognition from a bunch of old farts who probably still think its the 50s and know nothing about art or the modern world we live in... whoopee..... what was it I heard yesterday.. that there is no actual requirement for the people who vote to even have to actually watch the films they vote on.. how stupid is that.

Digger Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 I see almost nothing come out of Hollywood worth wasting my time over these days! Haven't for years! Special effects seem to have taken over from talent and good story line. Remakes of good films turned into utter crap by over-used actors. Original ideas seem to be a thing of the past. I'll pass on the oscars thanks~
SmokeyGhost Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 While I go to the movies and enjoy a number of films, when it comes to awards and all that, it's always in the back of my mind that, with film, they get to shoot the scenes over and over until they feel it's "right." In comparison, for stage they have only one shot at it each performance, so it'd had better be good else the show will close rather quickly. Just my take on it.
darling67 Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Just like the music industry, you've got to look a little harder for the really good movies, and ignore—to some degree—the hype surrounding others. But I find the indignation over The Oscars here just a bit.... much. I have lots of friends in the film industry, and it is big deal to them and their jobs, etc. and I've gone to lots of "Oscar parties" over the years. It's just fun, really. You need not pay attention to them if you don't want to; you need not pay attention to people who are famous—some of which are quite talented and actually do something positive with the fruits of their labors. But don't mock what you don't understand. In the end, it's just another awards ceremony—not unlike what every performing arts industry holds every year.
Vinlander Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I care as much for Oscars as I do for Grammies
capmaster Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I care as much for Oscars as I do for Grammies Same here.
Retired Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I never watch them, absolutely no interest. However, my wife is definitely into that stuff like you guys are into music. I cannot go to a movie with her without her telling me through the show, who is who, and you know their daughter don't you, well that is the cousin of, blah blah blah. Then if I go to sleep or nod off I get an elbow. "Are you sleeping?" "not anymore!"
cody78 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 So I guess none of you guys will be taking part in the Gibson Forum Member of the Year awards this year?
