Hi everyone. Just joined as looking for some advice and info please if possible.

We have a Gibson Century acoustic guitar which we know my partners grandfather won in a bet during the war and wondered if there was much interest or knowledge of the guitar as understand very rare in uk so we have been told ?

Can add some pics if of interest ? Not sure how I do this ?

Any info greatfully received.

Thanks

The Gibson Century was introduced in 1933 as the Century of Progress model because of the Century of Progress World Fair in Chicago. It has the same body shape as the L-00, L-0, L-1 flat tops, but its B&S are maple. The very first few were 12-frets -- as were the Hawaiian model -- but the later ones were 14-fret. Some of the B$S were solid, some not.

We have a couple -- a 12 and a 14. Totally cool guitars. They are rare, but not super rare. The 14-frets are more common.

Hi

Yes that's the one. Mother of pearl ? Let me take some pics and post them up shortly.

Thanks.

That's "mother of toilet seat" (manmade material) rather than mother of pearl.

Guess we need to insure it properly now.

They are very cool guitars.

Thanks

Looks to be in really nice shape. I would insure it for $4-$5k. You see more asked for them, but I'm not sure they get it. As Tom says, they are uncommon, but not rare. They were made for several years in the 1930's.

Will make sure we insure it fully. Not sure we would sell it anyway as been passed down the family.

Very cool, and in very nice condition. Yes, affectionately referred to as Mother of Toilet Seat.

Also interesting to see the export stamp (is that a sticker?) on the center strip inside the soundhole- is there also a "Made in the ..." stamped on the back of the headstock?

Looks like a sticker. I thought the same thing (export model), as I haven't seen that sticker on domestic models.

Yes it is a sticker. And yes it has Made in the USA stamped behind the headstock. Does that affect the value of the guitar ?

Thanks for views guys.
