JayinLA Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I have been jamming with a drummer that I really like, and I know a few good bass players. I am seriously thinking about the idea of a 3 piece band. I have not played as a three piece since high school. I feel up to the challenge, and insodoing I have been listening to various 3 piece arrangements. I was hoping to hear who your favorite 3 piece is, and why? I don't want to limit it to a band not having an occasional percussionists or guest instrumentalist, but one where the lead singer is a founding member and part of the 3 piece ensamble. I have been listening to Mountain, West, Bruce, and Lang, Cream, The Hendrix Experiece, Band of Gypsies, Nirvana, High On Fire, Them Crooked Vultures, and more. Who is your favorite 3 piece?
rct Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Grand Funk Railroad, particularly that black live record. rct

LPguitarman Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 RUSH... talent at it's best from all three members.
Rabs Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Always liked me some Police.. Stings unique voice and enough guitars to keep me interested.... Plus some great great songs.. They just work. And of course ZZ Top.. Whats not to like :)
quapman Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 There are a few but I put Primus right up there. Why? Because they are off the wall which I like. Musically they are fantastic, tight and unpredictable. Great stuff!
'Scales Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 my favourite format (particulalry live so not multi tracked) - i love watching local 3 piece garage and punk bands and have started one doing my orginals. of the big names.. well, most of them really. Motorhead, ZZ Top and Taste spring to mind.
Rabs Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Hmm, also The Jam, some great classic songs..... And who remembers Kings X.. They has their own thing going on

Dennis G Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Hendrix, Cream and ZZ Top. All you need to know LOL.
rocketman Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 We were mostly a Rush cover band, but had four band members. Our drummer would sing the non-Rush tunes, but our sax player had a very high voice and he sang the Rush tunes. He also played keyboards, so we didn't need to worry about getting Taurus pedals. Plus he was award winning sax player, who was taught by John Sedola (he played lead sax for Paul Whiteman's band, who commissioned Gershwin to write Rhapsody in Blue). So we could play a lot of different styles, which came in handy for weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. Sometimes I'd play the keyboards while he did his sax thing. Our sax player is now a dentist in Scottsdale. We're starting to practice again, but I'm filling in all the keyboard parts on guitar, and using triggers for other things. Watching early day Rush do what they did without all the modern technologies we have now just amazes me. Geddy and Neil are definitely at the top of any best rock bass and drummer lists. Alex gets lost in the shuffle, but not to other guitarists. EVH was asked once how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world. His response was that Alex Lifeson was the best. I won't argue that here, but he sounds pretty darn good here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7LT9JG2ly0
darling67 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 That would be a tie between… ... and... What the hell happened to my images???? Let's try this again... and...

cody78 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Easy to answer! My vote goes to The Bad Plus, three of the best musicians you will ever hear, but they don't have a guitar player.
sparquelito Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 I have been a fan of Grand Funk Railroad and Rush for so many years I cannot exactly recall. In the end, my favorite 3-piece band would have to one of the few of all those listed previously, including Rush of course, still going strong to this day; That little old band from Texas, ZZ Top. Billy Gibbons has such a wall of guitar tone, you really don't find yourself wishing they had a 2nd guitar player.
pippy Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Rory Gallagher when he was fronting a 3-piece - whether with Taste or afterwards - was always electrifying. I quite liked his 'Lou Martin on Keyboards' phase but my favourite stuff is when he had Gerry McAvoy and Ted McKenna backing him. I also had a soft spot for ELP when I was a youngster. Pip.

JayinLA Posted January 26, 2016 Author Posted January 26, 2016 I'm not a big fan of the guitar work by Rush, but I respect the hell out of em. Seems like the commonality of having a good 3 piece is a thundering, dynamic drummer, and titanic guitar sound. Here's one with Dave Grohl on Drums, John Paul Jones (Nuff said)-Bass and Josh Homme-Guitar (queens of the stone age). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSnCKhRGu3w
