Appalachian Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Greetings! I recently purchased a Les Paul Studio 2015 and I am looking to replace the dark creme plastics it came with. Does anyone have any experience with the aftermarket pick guard and pickup rings Gibson has on the market? They are listed as Creme, but in the pics they look like they have a pinkish hue to them. None of the stores around here carry Gibson so I can't see them in person. Is this what they look like in person? I am looking for plastic colors similar to the color on the 2016 Les Paul Standard. Also, the creme pick guard is listed as for the Les Paul Standard. But looking at the pics it looks identical to the one listed as for the Studio. Will the Standard pick guard fit a Studio? Thanks.
merciful-evans Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Gibson list your Studio as having dark cream plastics (my pedantic self is refusing 'creme'). My 2015 Less+ has cream plastics. It does not look pink at all. It definitely looks cream coloured. As for a pickguard, the Studio is not fitted with one. 2015 LPs have detachable pickguards (no screws). They attach by slotting into the bottom of the pickup rings. So if your pickup rings have apertures at this position, its compatible. But I doubt you want to mix dark cream rings with a cream pickguard, so when you replace the pickup rings, get the 2015 detachable sort. Cream looks fine, but it will look lighter next to a dark coloured finish (such as that Studio blue). Good luck
Mr. C.O. Jones Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 I don't think the ones with screwless pickguard are available as aftermarket option. But these will fit: http://store.gibson.com/bridge-pickup-mounting-ring/ And.... http://store.gibson.com/neck-pickup-mounting-ring/ I don't know if they are pinkish, all the stock plastics on my 14 Traditional where cream but all different shades. Especially the pickup selector washer and the jack plate were pinkish indeed. I changed all to historic plastics, and they match better. The historic pickup rings are taller And you will have to bring them in shape before installing. They are straight, your guitars top insn't.

I didnt know about having to shape them. The rings on my Deuce are not properly shaped, so I could do that mod if I am bored one day. Cheers Cap!
pippy Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 My own pedantic self would just like to add that the p'guards, p'up rings etc. on the original LPs were also of slightly different shades of cream from one another due to the different materials used and production techniques used for their manufacture. FWIW IMX the regular Gibson aftermarket plastics are slightly pinkish if compared to their Historic replacement parts. Seen in isolation this difference is hardly important. IMO, of course. Pip.

Actually to say the truth I kept writing after my last sentence. But deleted it afterwards. This is what I deleted: Well, the historic plastics are not 100% the same shade, but still, better than the stock ones. And of course Pippy is right with everything what he said. But in my case the stock plastics were just to off for my OCD. I mean, I'm the guy who HAD to change the chrome PU covers because they didn't match with my nickel hardware! Sick, huh?
Guest Farnsbarns Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 You do not need to shape the pickup rings. They simply conform as the screws are tightened, exactly as is done in the factory.

First I screwed them on without shaping, and of course it can be done. But to me it looked kind of funny, especially on the neck. That pickup is very low and it looked weird. Sadly I don't have a reissue and even worse I never had the pleasure of holding a real vintage burst in my hands. So I can't tell if that's the way it should be. My experience with the normal plastics screw them on and all good. With the historic ones not so much. I prefere the looks after shaping them. But truth is it is not needed necessarily.
