carsandguitars Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Looking at "new" J160e still for sale in the store. Must be from the last time Gibson made in 2014 or 2015? Does anyone know which pickup this was built with, P90 or P100? Anyone know the spec's on the bracing? I can't seem to find any info on the net. Quote
MissouriPicker Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 From what I understand, if it's a John Lennon J160e, it has a P90.........If it's a J160e that is not the Lennon model, it has a P100. Quote

MissouriPicker Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks, Red. I thought it was just the Lennon guitar that had the P90 for authenticity reasons. Didn't know they were doing the same with the solid wood models. We don't hear too much about these guitars. Haven't seen one of the Gibson models being used in the last few years, at least. I run into an Epi model every-now-and-then. Quote

That moves the bridge a little closer to the soundhole and into the narrower part of the top, which produces a little more fundamental and percussive tone than a J-45. Not as sensitive either, so maybe not a finger-picker's dream, but a nice instrument for a singer to accompany oneself, especially on more uptempo stuff, as the muscular, percussive tone is less likely to overwhelm the vocal and is a good compliment. What makes the Lennon (and '60s spec reissues) especially different is the laminated top and ladder bracing. It really adds (or subtracts, depending on how you look at it) something to the unique tone. Red 333 Quote
carsandguitars Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 And John Lennon probably knew nothing of any of this! Quote
Red 333 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Anyone know the spec's on the bracing? I can't seem to find any info on the net. Don't know why I didn't see this part of your question earlier. Sorry for the late reply. The J-160e Standard has a solid top, is x-braced, and has a fixed saddle. Any of the 60s-spec reissues have a laminated top, ladder bracing, and adjustable saddle. Any J-160e from the year you mentioned will have a P-90. Red 333 Quote

If another layer of fabric is beneath the metal plate (the metal plate looks like it's sandwiched between two fabric layers), you have a P-100. Search Google Images for "P90 vs P100 Pickup" if that is unclear. Gibson has issued J160e Standards with both over the years. The latest version's specs (which I read on Musician's Friend) says P90. Mine has a P90, and it's a 2006, I think. Edited April 6, 2020 by Red 333 Quote

Red 333 Posted April 7, 2020 Posted April 7, 2020 (edited) From that perspective, it looks like a P-90. Edited April 7, 2020 by Red 333 Quote

Gibson said me yesterday: “Hello I am sorry, the specifications on Rainbow (this is the partner) don’t appear to be accurate. Our own internal spec sheets call for the P-90 pickup for this model. I will confirm this with our factory still. Kind regards,” Thank you Red 333 1 Quote
