Jim Wilson Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I went over to the Wildwood Guitars web site and had a look at their ebony J45. Lordy! That's a pretty guitar. Now, pretty doesn't mean that it sounds good. And I really don't need another J45 (I already have two). So, y'all would be a big help if you would talk me out of that ebony model. I'd appreciate it and my bank account would appreciate it.
EuroAussie Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Fingerprints are really visible on an all black finish and looks messy ... there you go.
Jim Wilson Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Well, we can't have that, can we, pard?..........uh.....I mean, Mate?

capmaster Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 A solid black finish will hide the woods from your looks. Too much of tonewood mystery. Hope this helps.
Jim Wilson Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Y'all aren't a whole lot of help. I think my only hope is that they sell out before I weaken.
capmaster Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Black guitars are most susceptible to environmental temperature changes. They get hotter when hot and colder when cold more intensely and more rapidly than those with a brighter finish. Not good.
kidblast Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Y'all aren't a whole lot of help. I think my only hope is that they sell out before I weaken. but the bastids will only make more... there's really no hope...
capmaster Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 but the bastids will only make more... there's really no hope... Don't reveal all the business secrets. I also won't talk about possible advantages of my black instruments.
flatbaroque Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Johnny Cash blamed his pill addiction on his black D-35! Go figure.
Jim Wilson Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Flatbaroque, I used to say that as long as Johnny Cash was alive I couldn't be the world's worst guitar player. And, as long as Bob Dylan is alive I can't be the worst singer.
scriv58 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 ah, but can you phrase like dylan, or command an audience like cash? set the sights higher rather than lower
Jim Wilson Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Hell, Scriv58, I can't even get anywhere near their income bracket!
OldCowboy Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Black guitars are far too easy to break when you're fumbling toward the light switch and left the guitar out of its case.
flatbaroque Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 A black J45 looks too much like a Takamine ha! Dave that explains Bruce Springsteen's Tak.dalliance - he thought he was playing a black J-45.
J-200 Koa Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Black guitars make you look thinner. I'll take two.
slimt Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 I personally do not like black finished guitars.. Not at todays prices..
BluesKing777 Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Black guitars are rock and roll!!!!!! My black Gibson hasn't held a fingerprint since about 1937: BluesKing777.
OldCowboy Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Black guitars are rock and roll!!!!!! My black Gibson hasn't held a fingerprint since about 1937: Now THAT is a nice guitar; owned one similar from 1970 until 1987 and wish I'd never let it go. You could actually sense it's history of blues licks while you played! BluesKing777.
Dave F Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Aren't we loosing sight of the purpose of the thread? Talk one of our members out of buying a new guitar or at least stall him long enough until we can check it out and see if we want it?
MissouriPicker Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 The only way I'd want a black guitar is if it was one of the Cash D35s that Martin made. At the right price I'd buy one. I'm likely too zeroed-in on sunbursts of one type or another at this time. I know the color has nothing to do with a good guitar, but the black guitar for Cash was symbolic for who he was. For me, I like a guitar with a burst, although I'll "never say never" if a guitar calls my name,..
Jim Wilson Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 "if a guitar calls my name." Yep, that's my problem, too. That's why I've got my fingers in my ears. I DO NOT NEED A NEW GUITAR (y'all please remind me that I said that).
Jim Wilson Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 Joking aside, those ebony 45's are mighty good lookin' guitars!
capmaster Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 Looks are not enough. The black finish can make the tone very dark.
