buliwyf Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 When my dad passed away my mom sent me all his smaller instruments.Dad played harmonica for the golden age harmonicat's so he had 5 very expensive Honer harmonicas and a few other brands.I couldnt in good conscience sell them even though the cromatic harmonicas were all worth around $600.00 plus. (I didnt know how expensive they were) I play the regular marine band and blues harp but the cromatics are in the hundreds of dollars. Also I sent from my dad a bunch of recorders and some steel and older wooden fifes and 2 flutes from 1900. I hope at least a soldier overseas gets some use from the harmonicas and it makes me feel good knowing maybe I made someone happy. They just dont take guitars only (although that what they like best besides cash) I found out they take smaller instruments and cash so if you have an extra guitar or something else that makes music send them out to Guitars 4 Troops 8161 Hwy 100 #196 Nashville, TN 37221-4213 or on facebook https://www.facebook.com/Guitars4Troops/?fref=ts I cant believe that black plastic one sells new for over 300.00

buliwyf Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 I ment it as they just dont take only guitars but other musical instrumennts.
JayinLA Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 That's awesome!!! Hate is not a strong enough word to describe the revolting feelings I have towards American agression worldwide. But being anti-war, does not mean anti-troops. These kids are, by far, the braveist kids I have ever known, and they're just like us, skateboard, play guitar, (harmonica perhaps) and I think it's a great program. I'll tell you what...My guitars over the years have gotten me through things that I thought I never could handle.
buliwyf Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 JaylinLA I couldnt agree with you more,I dont like or think we should be the worlds police but thee troops need something to do with their down time.As i shipped the box i thought of the episode of MASH where the biggest thing a soldier could have was a harmonica.I just thought I would be very happy if a soldier got some enjoyment out of the harmonicas.I would have felt so guilty selling them when my dad was in the Korean war and I know its what he would want to do with them.I used to play a lot of diatonic many years ago and loved me some James Cotton, 100% cotton I could play most of the album. Those cromatic harps with the key change are a real challenge and should keep someone busy for a while.
skilsaw Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 That's awesome!!! Hate is not a strong enough word to describe the revolting feelings I have towards American agression worldwide. But being anti-war, does not mean anti-troops. Maybe the last "Good War" was WWII. Britain was on it's knees. Hitler had conquered Europe and was preparing for the invasion of England. A handful of RAF pilots in Hurricanes and Spitfires held the Luftwaffe at bay from June to September, 1940 in what has become known as "The Battle of Britian". God, that was a fight! The allies, Commonwealth and Britian continued the fight but no end was in sight. The Americans joined the War in Europe after Pearl Harbour, December 7, 1941. It took a couple years to mobilize all the nations in Britian for the re-invasion of Europe, D-day, June 6, 1944. While many people don't like the Hollywood myth that the Americans alone beat the Nazi Power, we cannot deny the significance of the American contribution. An Allied Victory in Europe would not have happened without the Americans. I think the Americans were the first in the fight against North Korean after their invasion of South Korea, June 25, 1950. The United Nations was right there with the Americans. Maybe the Americans fought under the UN Flag. Could that be a "Good War" or a "Just War" too? It was actually called "A Police Action" by the UN and it has never ended. The Americans (or UN?) are still there I believe, helping defend the border between North and South Korea. American military involvement world wide since then is not so clear. There have been mistakes and errors in judgement. Other people would use stronger language to describe it. I think the American people were seduced by the John Wayne Western where the hero shoots the bad guy, kisses the girl, and rides off into the sunset. Life isn't that easy as history has taught us. To me, War is the last option. But to face the threat of tyranny or imperialism, a nation must be ready to fight. The Arabs didn't know what they were up against when they mobilised their armies on the Israeli border in May 1967. In reaction to the mobilisation of Egyptian forces, Israel launched a series of preemptive airstrikes against Egypt and a ground offensive into Gaza and the Sinai on June 5. In 6 days they kicked the Arabs ***. Israel's message was, "Don't mess with me!" Unfortunately, 49 years later, the Arab Israel issues remain unresolved. Israel is standing strong, but the injustice against the Palestinian people cannot be denied. Peace seems impossible. War is not the final answer. There has to be a negotiated settlement. War is the last option, but nations must be ready to stand up against tyrants and bullies. Unfortunately, I don't think American foreign policy since Korea has been driven by "War as the last option." Too much Hollywood. This is actually a great debate to have on the forum. I fear it will be killed by the moderators because it is a sensitive issue with no clear consensus on right or wrong. But that is why we need the dialogue!!! Thanks JayinLA for a great comment. I would say that I am anti-war too, but if there is no other option, I'm ready for a fight.
buliwyf Posted February 12, 2016 Author Posted February 12, 2016 I dont want a pat on the back i just wanted to say it felt good to me to do just a small thing for my dad,Lets not get carried away about war or the thread will disappear. Lets just say the troops need every bit of support we can give them, after all they are human beings.
skilsaw Posted February 12, 2016 Posted February 12, 2016 I dont want a pat on the back i just wanted to say it felt good to me to do just a small thing for my dad,Lets not get carried away about war or the thread will disappear. Lets just say the troops need every bit of support we can give them, after all they are human beings. Your generosity to the troops and your first post is beautiful. I know you didn't write it for a pat on the back. You are just saying, "Here is an opportunity to show our support for the troops." I like history. Not just history of war. I like to think about the successes and failures and what we can do differently so we don't repeat mistakes. I'm fascinated by negotiations when there is no single answer and no clear right or wrong. It doesn't matter if it is Obama and Putin, or a husband and wife. There is a lot of the same stuff going on. If people can remain civil and keep an open mind, a dialogue on a forum can be very informative... but it doesn't always work that way so the forums have their rules and the moderators lock or delete threads. If I've sowed the seeds that lead to this thread being stopped I hope the moderators will let you restart the thread and keep it focused on "Guitars for the Troops" because supporting the troops is what it is all about. I hope you feel good for doing the right thing, not because of any praise you get, but just because it was the right thing to do. We all have opportunities to do such things. We just need to keep our eyes open to see them.
Digger Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Thinking of serving personnel always meet with my approval, so good on you mate! Just for the records regarding the Korean War, us Aussies were there with you from early on. https://www.awm.gov.au/atwar/korea/ My uncle was in infantry there.
buliwyf Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 My dad was a photographer in Korea and flew a few times with john Land the inventor of the land camera.i have a video he did with the Smithsonium institute telling stories of his Korean experinces it's as funny as any episode as MASH.Guess thats why he liked the show so much.
ZettaVita Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Another similar worthwhile organization is Guitars For Vets, http://www.guitars4vets.org/. Some manufacturers, like Dean Zelinsky, will donate a guitar if you purchase a "Vets" guitar from them.
