retrorod Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I saw one of these Harmony built Roy Smeck Professionals on the Pickers Supply website. I am now "smitten for a Smeck." The airplane bridge is full of coolness! Cuban mahogany, pearloid peghead. Over the top with the looks! http://harmony.demon...t/model/347.htm... anyone have one? Anyone else like it?
j45nick Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 I've never seen one, but that's a wild guitar. I've had the hots for a Radio Grande for a long time.
retrorod Posted February 14, 2016 Author Posted February 14, 2016 Hey Nick! Yes, it is quite unusual. My 2013 Vintage Guitar Guide only has the H1252 Hawaiin model in the 2-3k price range, making it about the most expensive Harmony ever! Here is a link to the store that I saw it in.....that sparked my interest. http://pickerssupply.com/ If you or I don't spring for it, I think it a fitting candidate for BK007 or Jannusguy2. These guys can rock some vintage guitars!

These guys can rock some vintage guitars! Until I move a couple of other guitars, I ain't buying anything, unfortunately. The old stock market has not been too kind to me the last few months. Only traders like Sal are making the big bucks right now, and we may see him in the subway with a guitar pretty soon. But it's fun to dream.
62burst Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 That bridge is amazing... the strings only add to the sense of movement of that 1930's aeroplane. Fortunately, 'would probably take an act of God to achieve liftoff from the top of the guitar. And it could be a great sounding guitar. 15" lower bout. 24.75" scale length? Bran Dillard, the proprietor of Pickers Supply is good people. You should ring him up- he may be going to Spartanburg (SC) to be at the Bee3 Vintage South Carolina show on the 27th & 28th of Feb; hopefully you can check that guitar out there. Yes, little else in common with the Gibson Roy Smeck, other than the Smeck name and a beautiful 'burst. No deep body(?), no 16" Jumbo footprint, and no 12th fret neck join. It does, however, have frets on it, so there is no originality dilemma about converting the guitar over for Spanish style playing as there is with the Gibson Smeck, which was originally set up for Hawaiian. And yes, Nick, the vintage rosewood Gibson Roy Smeck Radio Grande might be a great white whale in these sights as well. Rod- thanks for sharing a very cool guitar with us.
Lars68 Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 That is really a cool guitar. I haven'ts seen anything like that bridge before. I kind of wish Harmony would have created something wild with the pickguard as well, to distance the design even further from the Gibsons of the time. Is it x-braced? Lars
j45nick Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 And yes, Nick, the vintage rosewood Gibson Roy Smeck Radio Grande might be a great white whale in these sights as well. Just call me Ahab. Have ye seen the white whale? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfb8nsgA6aE
