jvi Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 hey all , I sometimes like to use a capo and the one Ive had for years is the kyser, thing is it seems to squeeze pretty tight on the j 45 neck - any suggestions for a better one or dont worry ? thanks, jim
EuroAussie Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I find the G7 is best at keeping intonation. The spring ones like Dunlop are great for quick application but they stretch the strings to buggery out of intonation.
Avery Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Really like the Schubb. It's adjustable so you can loosen it the further up the neck you go.
modoc_333 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 if you like a Kyser style, go with the planet waves. same type, but the spring is adjustable for tension. Keith
Dave F Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 if you like a Kyser style, go with the planet waves. same type, but the spring is adjustable for tension. Keith ++1 I have about one of everything but tend to go back to the Planet Waves. I like the one with the built in tuner so you can tweak the tuning after you put it on.
Jim Wilson Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Lots of different capos out there, so you can find the one that suits you. That's what most of us have done and why we've got a box with capos in that we never use. By the way, I use a Shubb.
jvi Posted February 17, 2016 Author Posted February 17, 2016 my local (loco ?) store has shubb and planet waves so seems like its a coin flip so far,the adjustable tension seem like a good option, *** the ns artist with tuner is out of stock nationwide, canada that is, thanks for all helpfull input !! Jim
aliasphobias Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 The best is Elliott. Many and most of the others work fine but the Elliott or Elliott-McKinney is the best I have encountered. Shubb and Paige are in my top 5.
BluesKing777 Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Shubb - right over the fret. I always thought they were in tune the best, but that was using a blue tuner. Put the more exact strobe tuner on and all strings are out....but the guitar is in tune with itself nicely. The Kyser can thrown them right out. Elliot Elite works great on the fret, looks great - I got the brass option - but is expensive. G7 good to ok for strumming, but bend a note and it won't return to its spot.... BluesKing777.
OldCowboy Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Shubb for narrow frets; Paige for medium/jumbo frets. The Kyser is a nice concept, but involves too much retuning.
VincentG Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I use the shubb classic with my J-45 and it works fine! I think with the shubb (and probably others too) you need to be very careful when you put it in place or you will get out of tune. You need to get it in contact with all the strings capo as perpendicular to them as possible, and then close it. And not too tight. If you do it right, you will just have to push a little the bass strings over the soundhole with the palm of your hand, and you will be in tune.
Allie Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 For the money...Shubb. Easy to use and near zero possibility of any damaging effects to the instrument. I store my Shubb ON the nut when not in use, no issues so far, but then again I'm not recording an usually play alone so if it effects the tuning when stored there it isn't detectable with my ear.
blindboygrunt Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 My Elliott is the best capo I've used. But worth the money? Perhaps not. Shubb are the best probably , but such a pain they can't be clipped to the guitar. The g7th is a great capo. I swapped mine for a Newport one and wish I hadn't as it doesn't give great contact . Works better on the Martin because of the lesser radius fretboard , but still I'd go for the g7th. I had a Paige which I liked an awful lot . Not much use am I ? Pick one ? Shubb wins considering cash and use and quality . With the g7th right behind it. One looks modern and one looks classic , pick the one that matches your haircut
fortyearspickn Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 If we're picking to match our haircut - i'll have to go with the #2 pencil and rubber band capo. Otherwise... I put my life-long-love for Kyser aside for G7.
Lefty Guy Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 If money is no object then nothing beats an Elliott for me...beautiful design, quick release, faultless performance & you can store it above the nut. I have the "Elite" model & love it http://www.elliottcapo.com/product/elite-guitar-capo/ Value for money-wise I'd go for a Shubb http://www.shubb.com/capo/index.html
MorrisrownSal Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 My three favorite capos are the standard Shubb, the new F1 Shubb (eliiott style), and the Planet Waves NS... which is the one I use when I gig. It is light, kaiser style, and holds a spare pick.
Dave F Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 If we're going by hair styles I wouldn't even have any strings on my guitar to worry about a capo
jvi Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 great responses, thanks got the shubb standard, got no hair tho, however the capo is nice and light and just as easy as my old kyser and the adjustable tension screw is what I dig most cheers Jim
ponty Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 I have recently got 'The Ultimate Capo" for both banjo and guitar. They work great. They are 42 dollars - maybe a little high priced. Finish could be better too. Still, it is low profile, works well, and looks good.
