Recording Acoustic Guitar Part 3

Enjoyable as well. Summary at t= 6:42. A bit strange here, though, as the guitarist had to get up and take a new position to demo each mic? Surely the good folks at Watt Matters Studio could do a little editing to keep mic and player position constant, and simply change mics in the stand.

Liked it a lot. Especially enjoyed mic positioning contrast in vid #2. Thanks for sharing.

It did look a bit strange, making him move, but the techie got the position very nicely with marks on the floor and the mic angled correctly before placement, so he appeared to just 'plonk' the mic and stand down.

I love the room they were in - mine is a tad smaller, so lucky to have the mic and stand in one spot.

The very best thing I did was buy the Neumann KM184 - like he said, it gives the sound of the guitar!

https://www.neumann.com/?lang=en&id=current_microphones&cid=km180_description

These are often what the guitar demonstration videos (When Tony was at MV) use for a mic.

Now I have been recording with the Neumann KM184 a little bit differently lately - I have been playing and singing 'live' at the same time! It is a VERY sensitive mic, happily catching a conversation 3 houses down, a lawnmower down the end of the road, tv in the lounge room, dishwasher, air conditioner etc. etc. So if I sang direct to the mic, it will pick up every mouth sound - lip smacks, plosives, breathing etc.

So at the moment, I am facing the KM184 across my sitting position instead of straight to my face, facing to my right shoulder approx. That gives me a good vocal sound and a good mix of guitar at the same time - takes a while to get the balance.

Truly, get yourself one of these mics, or 2 for stereo, instead of that next guitar!

Very interesting clip! I am actually considering a Neumann TLM 102 or 103 to put through my apogee ONE.

It would be just the guitar and my voice with only one mic.

Don't know if it's the right choice but it would be for sire a big step up from my Zoom H5...

My advice regarding Neumann microphones is to NEVER LISTEN TO THEM!!! If you do, you will be parting with your money. The U87 is possibly the best large diaphragm condenser microphone in the world. The TLM102 and TLM103's are great entry level (at $1000) Neumann's. I'll be getting one I'm sure (because I didn't follow my own advice and actually listened to them).

I love my Rode NT1A (for now).

Try the KM184!

I have a few Rodes, including the NT1a, K2 Tube and th 55 KM184 copies... When I bought the Neumann, I intended it just for guitar recording but now I love singing AND playing through it. If placed right, it just doesn't need days of work with EQ. My Rodes had me chasing my tail a bit with eq.

So off to the pawn shop or ebay with all the Rodes and another Neumann KM184, the 103 from the video maybe....and on we go! [mellow] [mellow] [mellow]

Are you saying you record guitar+vocals "live" with only one KM184? Do you think it is a better choice at that job than a TLM 102 or TLM103?

I have never tried the 102 or the 103, but I did agonize over the 102 being cheaper than the KM184 when looking around.

The guy in the video did say the 184 records the guitar 'as it sounds' and I do think it is the best for acoustic guitar that I have used. I didn't think it would be much for vocal, but I played a guitar with Aura electronics direct to my mixer, no mic, and used the 184 to sing and well, loved it. The last few tracks I have been doing the singing and guitar in one KM184. (Angled across from the left side to my right shoulder, to be exact. This avoids the breathing noises a bit and gets the balance between vocal and guitar.)

I would buy a second KM184 for stereo recording before I bought the 103.

Thank you for your input! Lol, come on who cares about stereo?

Stereo on internet is different than stereo condensor mics through a nice mixer and great headphones or monitors. I have 2 Rode copies of the KM184 and a friend made a jerry-rigged mic stand contraption out of wood scraps and mic stand bits - 2 mic clips set for xy stereo placement or a quick twist to point them straight ahead or outwards. Stereo just seems to capture more guitar - sound does spill out of the whole guitar, not just the top. 2 Neumanns on a J45 or OM18 could be ecstatic! But one Neumann is better than 2 Rodes. YMMV.
