saturn
Sure, there are the big name brands we all have heard of. But, I bet all of us here can come up with some "local" suggestions to share with each other. Does your home state or province, have a beer, wine or spirit that could compete with the other brands around the world? For a very small State in the U.S., Maryland can boast some of the best beers, wines and spirits produced in the nation. Here are a few of my suggestions to recommend if you ever come across them: Beer: Heavy Seas (my favorite Loose Cannon IPA or Deep Six English Porter) , Flying Dog (Raging ***** IPA or K9 Winter Ale), or (Karloff probably knows this one) Evolution Wine: Basignani or Boordy Spirits: Coming soon from Kevin Plank ( the founder and owner of Under Armor) Sagamore Rye whiskey Give us your own suggestions..... SmokeyGhost
Sound like a fun thing but as a non-drinker since my early 30's, I'm not up with brands - apart from those I may glance at on the television. Will be interested to read what others come up with.
'Scales
All home made here. We usually have 3 different strengths of kegged beer on tap and its not bad, the major spirits have all been pretty well perfected. Ain't available for sale cos fines/gaol don't appeal to me, but if you're ever in the neighbourhood then stop by for as many as you can handle...all on the house of course
flyingarmadillo
We have a lot of them here in Houston. St. Arnold's is the local one I usually buy from: http://www.saintarnold.com/beers/ Of course since it's Texas there's always Shiner: http://www.shiner.com/beer For spirits these guys are local and make a nice single barrel (I haven't tried any of their other stuff): http://www.whitmeyers.com/home.php
Tman
I live in the Malibu viticultural region and there are some world class wines here. Not as well known as Napa for California wine but none the less great stuff. Rosenthal Malibu estate is right across the canyon from our house. jdgm
Over here in the UK my local brewery is the Hog's Back Brewery whose draught TEA (Traditional English Ale) is highly drinkable along with most of their other ales - Ripsnorter, and recently a fine strong IPA. There are many other small or micro-breweries in my part of the world, but drinking good beer in pubs now is prohibitively expensive; last week in Guildford a pint and a half cost me £5.10p. Cougar
This being Utah, we therefore have Polygamy Porter. Why have just one?
deeman
Everywhere you go, there are new breweries to discover. Chicago has some good ones. Back in the day Goose Island was the original craft beer. Now we have Revolution, 2 Brothers, 3 Floyd's, to name a few.
quapman
Not much for the bar scene for many years now so I'm pretty out of touch with the local brew. But I do like to try new beers any chance I get. Variety good.
saturn
Willimasburg Alewerks is close to my house. They make one called Cafe Royale that is killer. They also made about 5 years back the best Chocolate Stout I have ever had. http://alewerks.com/ Legend Brewing company is over an hour away in Richmond, VA. Love there Brown Ale. http://www.legendbrewing.com/ O'Connor Brewing Company is in Norfolk, VA and have only had one or two of there beers. All have been good. http://oconnorbrewing.com/ My in-laws live near Richmond, in Mechanicsville. I'll have to look for some of that Legends brew next time we visit them. Thanks
Pesh
Here in the UK there is a local maker called the Hepworth Brewery. Discovered during the summer last year; their 'Pullman' bitter is one of the nicest I've ever had the pleasure of drinking; I ordered a case from them for Christmas drinking towards the end of last year. I've been drinking the Goose 312 for years now, their new IPA is pretty good too. The most notable brewery in area is the Bruery in Fullerton. It's pretty good, but I was spoiled by the selection of local craft beers in Portland and Seattle

B) I have to agree with the Flying Dog. Not too many of their beers I don't like. Real nice people as well. If your ever in Frederick, stop by and check out the brewery. boozeball
In my neighborhood in Minneapolis there are least eight breweries and three distilleries. I make my living in the craft beer industry.

I usually go a little heavier. The craft breweries have really taken off lately. I'm lovin' it. Have a regular gig at World of Beer which usually has 50 or so craft beers on tap. Usually feeling pretty happy by the last set! As far as really local, my town is pretty small. Our first micro didn't make it a second is giving it a run now - we'll see. But just up the road, Jacksonville has quite a few.... Intuition, Bold City, A1A Ale Works, River City, Engine 15... all have some really tasty offerings. And my tiny town just got its first distillery... Saint Augustine Distillery! They make some fine small batch rum, gin, and vodka. And the first batch of bourbon should be ready soon. It will be the only small batch bourbon produced in Florida. Everyone is pretty excited.

How can it be bourbon if it's not from Kentucky? :) They should just call it rye or sour mash.
surfpup
How can it be bourbon if it's not from Kentucky? :) They should just call it rye or sour mash. Actually they address that on the distillery tour - the requirements for Bourbon (actually a French word) are as follows... The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 C.F.R. 5) state that bourbon made for U.S. consumption must be: Produced in the United States Made from a grain mixture that is at least 51% corn Aged in new, charred oak barrels Distilled to no more than 80% alcohol by volume Entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof Bottled (like other whiskeys) at 80 proof or more

btoth76
Hello! I am not a drinker. Despite of this, on a yearly average I consume 3-4 bottles of beer. (Hard to resist when friends come over). Then, my choice is one of these: "Black Samurai" - 12% stout from a local small brewery. "Dreher Classic" - Mass-produced local beer (In my opinion, the best European mass-made beer). "Edelweiss" - German weißbier. Bence.
