mickeybo89
Im torn between a gretsch white falcon or a 335.... ive now 4 weeks to make my mind up. There may be bias here.. what would you choose
rct
I can not help you. Try as I may, I can not bond with hollers and semi-hollers. I have an Epi 175 Premium that is going out in trade in a bit, I gave it my best shot. 335s and Gretsch objects look like old metal trash can lids on me I'm told, like I'm holding a shield in a sword fight. It is my sad fate to probably never have one for any length of time. rct
charlie brown
Both! Get one now, then the other, at some point in the future! They have (to me) totally different sounds, and feel. Are you looking at the hollow-body White Falcon, or the "Center Block" version? The Center Block version would be "closer" to the ES-335. But, they still have a much different sound...IMHO. The Gretsch is more open/twangy, whereas the 335 seems less so. But, NOT in a bad way, just different. If you've demo'd both, you know what I mean. Good Luck, on your which to get first decision. Hall
ES-335. Amen.
merciful-evans
Ive not played a White Falcon, so I cant comment on handling. Sound: This is easier. I prefer the sound of a ES-335. I think that sound is more important than handling anyway. More importantly, what sound do you prefer? There's quite a difference after all. Other differences include scale. The Gretch has a 25.5" scale, while the Gibson a 24.75" scale. Fingerboard. Gretch has ebony, while Gibson uses rosewood. We all have preferences where those details are concerned too, but you are buying. What do you prefer? If you dont know yet, then you need to find out in order to make an informed choice. Good luck
zigzag
If your primary interest is in the sound, I'd go with the White Falcon. Hard to beat FilterTrons for many genres- that distinctive Gretsch sound. My problem with most Gretsches is the Bigsby. If price is a factor, again I'd get the White Falcon, and for a 335, I'd buy an Epi Dot and mod with my favorite pickups. You'll save over a thousand bucks for a guitar that looks, fits, and plays pretty much the same as a 335 with your favorite pickups. If fit and playability are factors, that is something you'll have to work out for yourself.
jdgm
One of those choices where whichever one you go for, you'll always think about the other one. I would take a 335 but only because the White Falcon is too flashy for me.
Pesh
Nothing against Gretsch, but a 335 would be preferable if it were me choosing.
kidblast
hmmmmm tuff choice if I was in those shoes. I'd probably head over to the Gretch isle, as I've personally got a few that I consider "close" to the 335, (an ES135, and a Sheratone Pro II and an Elitist Chet Atkins Country Gent) the Falcon will not sound "gibson Semi" at all, and, they really are the shitznitz! Versatile
The White Falcon is very 'flash' and is often bought for that reason.... They are both very different animals so cannot be regarded as either/or.... Personal alternative would be the ES330/Epi Casino.... I sold my beloved ES335 last year as my tastes had evolved into more of the bright tones... White Falcon is MIJ.....ES335 is USA made if that is of any relevance.... mickeybo89
Thabks for all the comments so far.. many have valid points.. the usa vs japan thing doesnt bother me... i have played many japanese built guitars and thestandard is very high.. my favourite guitar happens to be my takamine.. i already own a les paul standard and a midtown custom. I am a bit concerned that the 335 might sound similar enough to either of these. The falcon is an altogether different animal.... this is hard
Retired
I've been in the same boat on decisions when you like both. I've never had either to comment about but I had a solid Gretch that I loved the sound back in the 60's. I have played the 335 at guitar center once and loved it but later bought something else. If it were me, I'd buy the 335. I was once told to make a list on a piece of paper of everything you like and dislike about both, then go with the most likes. Good luck on your decision. kidblast
The falcon is an altogether different animal.. yes, it will sound nothing like your Gibsons, you can walk that one to the bank...
brc
I have owned both, a mid 60s White Falcon (double cutaway) and a late 60s 335 Two complete different guitars. But if I had to choose one now it would be an early 60s White Falcon. But my reasons are not playability as much as they are the sound difference between them. I wish I still had them both, but I still have my 1960 ES 355, so because I have that one I would then go with the WF
'Scales
You will basically own the gig, the night, and the venue if you strut on and prowl the stage with a White Falcon.
Aster1
There's nothing like: "That great GRETSCH sound" to me and I LIKES IT!!! That's my vote. Something a little off the "Same ol' same ol'" too. I really like my DuoJet BTW. Aster
flyingarmadillo
Both, just make sure that the 335 is white with gold hardware so your SO can't tell the difference! For just one, I'd probably go with the Gretsch, it's more different than the 335 from anything else you have. If it doesn't work for you, trade it for a 335. thejay
I have always wanted a Falcon but due to recent production... 335 hands down. I might pick the 335 anyway because they are wonderful guitars! I have a couple, they are fantastic.
PelhamBlueFire
Gibson ES-335 all the way. I have a '58 VOS that Memphis started making this year. Great guitar! I like the Natural finish on them, and mine has a fat neck, MHS pick-ups, and just a great tone.
