Alex Kirtley
I'm looking to buy a Gibson Advanced jumbo at the minute, but I was just wondering out of curiosity whats the difference between the standard AJ and a custom?, they seem pretty much identical to me
GDC
Hi Alex. Welcome to the forum. Fact is, Gibson has made a few different custom AJs. Could you be more specific about which custom AJ you're thinking about? Or are you just asking generally without a specific one in mind? For example, I have a custom 2nd edition 75th anniversary AJ, which is slightly different from a 1st edition custom 75th anniversary AJ lol. They have made a few other custom AJ models as well. The difference in a standard one and one of the customs may be that the custom has a red spruce (rather than Sitka spruce) top and/or has some various variant of rosewood species backs and sides. It all depends. Owning both a custom AJ and a standard AJ, I can say that you'll likely be very happy with a standard, unless you're a fellow guitar nut like me and can't live without one of each. If you hang around here very much, you'll find yourself hopelessly in the latter category. Gibson AJs are, in my opinion, among the best guitars ever made. Again, welcome to the forum. Alex Kirtley
Thanks! I love Justin Townes Earles AJ, he has a AJ custom and I wanted one like that, I've got a custom shop J-45 so naturally I was thinking 2 customs would be nice too, but I can only afford used, so especially in the UK you take what you can find to an extent, I'm probably just being too fussy
Br1ck
I suspect all the manufacturers keep coming out with all the different guitars to combat the used market. A lot of J 45s have been made but it's hard to find many used ones in shops, but the net is a different matter. Even here in the US, trying to find an adi top you can play before you buy can take a while. You need persistence and luck.
GDC
Well I can't find the specs on his custom, so I've no idea how prevalent one might be. I bet it will be a long shot finding one on the used market. But maybe you'll get lucky. I'd also bet you'd love the standard AJ. Best of luck in your search and keep us posted. fortyearspickn
Seems like JTE also plays other guitars. (Who doesn't?) Not sure of the chronology - but I think he's played or is playing a Loar L016 more recently than a Gibson. Sort of like the L00. Of course, there are several variations of that model too.Though he's been quoted at giving up a $6K guitar for a $1K one - so that might mean it's the L00 1930s TV. G'Luck!
