Got tickets as a birthday present.Enmore theatre Sydney. What I've heard I like.I even covered one of his songs and put it on youtube. But I deleted it after 10 minutes cause it was a lame version compared to the original.

I know there are some fans here...Sal for one.

Will pass on my regards at Backstage drinks as usual.

Saw him in Toronto at the end of February, it was an amazing night. Shovels and Rope (Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst) opened and they were amazing as usual. Jason and the full band played a good two hours, mostly songs from Something More Than Free and Southeastern, plus a couple older classics. He is a fantastic songwriter, a great guitarist and has an amazing voice. Probably 8 guitar changes during the show! Best show I've been to in years. Enjoy, hope you feel the same.

Quick report.Wonderful show!Band was J.I. on Strat. and D-28?, another guitarist (not sure what electric guitar model.Fender headstock?), bass, drums, Keyboard.Keyboard player also played accordian (whenever he played it J.I would say "This is for Lars"..not sure what he meant by that??? [biggrin] .

He was roughly 50/50 on electric v acoustic. Most of the acoustic had full band backing. But he did maybe 3 or 4 songs just him on the Martin and maybe accordian or some mournful slide accompaniment.I loved these songs. But the full band was also kick ar**.he's a great electric player and has a really strong voice.

The only song I really knew before the night was Elephant. But half a dozen songs seemed to hit home on first hearing.Combination of uncliched memorable lyrics and strong melodies.

On the drive home my friend ,who had her ipad with her, googled songs...by phrases we remembered (cause we didn't really know the names). Then we listened to spotify. So some of the songs I instantly liked that he played were Cover me up, Travellin' alone, Declaration day, Speedtrap town?.

He did Elephant as the encore. What a song.Great sound too.Love the Enmore theatre.

I got home and stayed up till two working out a couple of the songs.I'm very tired at work.Typing this at lunch.

Cheers.

I cant wait till he tours in my neck of the woods.

FB, I do Cover Me Up and Songs She Sang in the Shower in my set. One of my favorite songs that he does is a song called Relatively Easy.... such a great vibe and message. Another great song for you to check out is Yvette, although the subject matter is dark.

I do lament that it seems to me there are not enough musicians telling stories nowadays with music... Isbell certainly is one who is.

ha Thanks Sal.I've been playing Cover Me up tonight.I think I'll have to sing it in D to get that big octave jump. Not capoed on 2 like he does. Can you sing it in his key.i think maybe you have a higher voice register than me?

Yea I love a good story song. When I see guys like him it gets my writing urge to awaken.

He plays it in C shape capo 2... I play it C shape without the capo (i.e in straight C). My buddy plays slide, and I was concerned that he might prefer the song in D... which would really strain me singing up high... but he has worked around it; I am glad!

Are you sure? There is this really nice riff based on drop d tuning and a d shape with hammer ons and a g played 55003X. I think that's how he does it on the city limits clip.Couple of youtube lessons teach it that way too.

I've been playing it this way as well with drop D. Love this song, one of his best (most are very very good). Glad you enjoyed the show.

ha..thanks jheath I'll continue with the Drop D...although I know Uncle Sal's patented New York tuning would sound good in his hands.

You should post a clip sometime jheath if you have a phone that records.

I've been playing Songs She Sang as well - in regular D. Is that the way you do it, or do you play in C and capo 2?

Never heard of this guy until you mentioned him FB. A bit too country for my liking but had a quick look at his tunes and a few that did capture my ear. Im sure it would be good in a concert especially with the talent he has around him.

He's sort of a bit of a tamer John Fullbright ?

I think he's playing at Merlefest so I should get to see him in a couple weeks. I'm not familiar with his music at all. That's what's fun about these festivals...you get exposed lots of acts...and if you don't like one you can just walk to the next stage and see somebody else!
