Hi ,I need some really good advice , I have been given a really good offer on one of my electric guitars that I have been selling . I own a 2015 J45 Standard that is like my right arm now . Question I play fingerstyle guitar with thumbpick and fingernails producing mainly instrumentals and playing during the worship in our local churches . I am looking to buy a second Gibson Acoustic , the models that I like are the Hummingbird Standard or a J200 Standard or how about a J29 , any advice please . The guitar would be plugged in weekly and I always play seated . Many Thanks for your suggestions .

I find that my J-185 EC cutaway sounds very good with a thumbpick..... Though I like standing and playing, it is very comfortable to sit and play

if you have the budget.. I'd point you to the J200 Standard (2016) witht he LR Baggs Anthem pickup factory installed.

I bought one in March, it eclipses every other acoustic in my collection. I did need to get the saddle and nut dressed to get the action where it "Should" be...

your mileage may vary

A rosewood might be a complement to your hog J45 ..................... check out any of the several variations ...... most don't have a factory pickup but some are factory drilled to take an under saddle pu. Or a smaller Gibson might work .... I love my 00.

I would second the vote for the J 200. I know they are not for everyone, but I love mine and along with my 45 are the two I will not ever part with.

I'd get "the bird" and not look back. Of course, if you've already got a J45 and don't want a second hog, then look at the J200 (another killer guitar). That being said, my Hummingbird and J45TV are two very different guitars. Another consideration is the Baggs Anthem. It's nothing short of fantastic. You have a tough choice to make, but it's a burden a lot of folks would be envious of.

Can't tell you what to buy, but would suggest trying a J-185 somewhere along the way. They're very comfortable to play - smaller than a 200 - and sound good whether you're fingerpicking or flatpicking. The maple body would give you a dimension that would go nicely with your J-45 and offer less radical a departure than, say, rosewood. Hadn't thought much about it previously, but I'm inclined to say that if I were limited to one guitar it'd likely be a J-185.

Just for fun, try to play some older J 45s. My 65 Epi Texan which has a J 50 body, is much thumpier and dryer than all the newer Gibsons I played when I was on the hunt. You need to find a few because they vary all over the place.

I second (3rd, 4th?) the motion for the J200 in maple. More different than the J45 hog, so you get more of a choice when you're deciding which one to grab.

The only caution - playing seated is not a problem usually - in spite of the huge lower bout. But, you really need to be on a stool. Sitting on a couch - for me, being of average stature, if the couch is one of those that you sink into. can cause some right arm angles that are a bit much. But, if you're only playing on a couch for an hour a week - it would be no problem. G'Luck.

The J200 looks a mighty fine beast.... [thumbup]

Personal preference...excuse my candour....

Would be to get something completely different

Like maybe a 12 string....Gibson....

Or one of the many superb alternatives out there

Taylor

Martin

Takamine

etc etc

What I think does not amount to a hill of beans. I would not own half the guitars I do if I listened to the advice of others. Any Gibson will work. But there are a ton of other guitars that will also work. Just play a bunch and one will jump out of the crowd grab you and shake you around a it. Best advice is not to go out shopping for any one specific guitar nor even a certain moniker on the headstock. Life is too short and there are way too many guitars out there.

That's a good notion, IMHO, especially if you can stay focused. I've seen people get totally overwhelmed by the sheer number of possibilities that are available. The nice thing about guitar hunting is that the season is always open on all of 'em!

Yes thanks to all , looking forward to the search , what a wonderful instrument the acoustic guitar is . Again many thanks

58, OK, here's some advice. If you had wanted folks on a Gibson Forum, where the praises of H'Birds and J200s are sung regularly, to help you decide between an H'Bird and a J200 - you should have asked instead, "Should I get a banjo? Should I get a 7 String Martin? Should I get a Telecaster? Should I get a nylon stringer?" Then - folks would have told you to be more focused and get an H'Bird or a J200.

Just my opinion - Since you're going to sit and amplify I would concentrate on comfort instead of tonewoods.

Your pickup and amp should produce the sound you want. I agree with the J185 for sit down comfort. You may even want to look smaller like an LG-2 or similar.

Personally, I would not want to sit and play a J200 for an extended time.
