Giving the Epi a little love:

First Verse and Chorus of "Idiot Wind" by Dylan (I spared you all the full 13 minute song) :)

Lately I have been keeping the Gibson in standard tuning and the Epi in Open D.

Here is the Dylan Version: One can get quite lost in the song....AMAZING!!!!!! gives me shivers...I wonder what guitar he was playing during those NY sessions?

Tab for anyone who wants to give it a stab:

Here's me and my band doing Stevie Nick's 'Gold Dust Woman' (or rather, a shortened version of it), a little over a year ago.

I played thru an old Tubeworks amp in the clean channel, dry.

(The reverb effect was courtesy of the tall ceilings of Bob the drummer's large living room/practice hall.)

My Les Paul Copper Top was set with all knobs to 5, middle pickup switch position, and tuned to open-D (D A D G B D).

Very nice.

Different tunings work the brain.

I haven't decided if that's a good thing, or not.

I always say the mandolin is tuned "upside down AND backwards".......

Finding out that some songs are in alternate or open tunings is always a thrill and an eye-opener for me. I remember always wanting to play "Question" by the Moody Blues. That opening 12 string chord riff was so amazingly cool (somewhat like Pete Townshend's Pinball Wizard). Even when the internet era arrived and I found guitar tabs of the song, they never sounded correct because they were in standard tuning.

Then I saw a performance of the song by Hayward and the band at Red Rocks and watched, fascinated, as Justin played a 12 string in OPEN C tuning! Who the hell would ever even THINK of open C on a 12 string??

I bought the DVD of the performance and was able to stop frame it to get the chord shapes and then learned the song that way. I tabbed it out and put it up on Ultimate Guitar:

Question Tab

I tracked a rather bare bones version of it with acoustic, bass and some choral synths here:

Question Cover

One of these days I'll track a full version with melotron synths and proper drums. I think this song from the early 70's is still very relevant today. I'm also fascinated that Justin wrote this song by combining two different songs!
