Tman Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Was able to choose between a maple advanced jumbo and this acacia J-45 at Instrumental Music in Thousand Oaks. 1 month ago John at IM asked Gibson if they could make another acacia J-45 like they made in 2015 and they said yes. Viola, one month later here it is. Played them both for a while and took this one home. It is really outstanding. My wife was there with me and she pointed to the J-45 and said that one looks and sounds better. Done. Then she pointed to an SJ-200 quilt and said "What about that one?" I said "not this trip." Cell phone photos don't do it justice. The honey burst finish, like the J-100 walnut, is really fabulous.
rct Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Dude. I don't even want a Gibson acoustic and I want one. rct

rct Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Isn't it cool? I'm afraid I'm hopelessly stuck on Gibson acoustics I look, I really do. I try lots, I really have, over many many years. Like PRS, you don't see any around the house, so I ain't run into one I had to have. rct

rct Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Next trip to California....you can be converted. Yes, yes I can. We are planning a big one. Need to get to Yosemite one more time, and need to get back to Death Valley so we can get out to the RaceTrack. Disneyland is a must. Again. And I promised a drive up the PCH to San Francisco so we can eat our selves to death. Prolly early 2019 if we live that long, we'll be retired and have no schedule to meet. If we do that one, yer on. Convert me and I'll take home another great guitar from another great drive around America! rct
OldCowboy Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Wow! Stunning guitar! When are you going back for the 200?

Wow! Stunning guitar! When are you going back for the 200? When my wife ramps up her business
Avery Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 That's a beauty, Tman. Is this the same one as the J-45 Koa? I recently played one that was several years old at a Guitar Center and it was my favorite Gibson there. I love that honeyburst too.

I recently played one that was several years old at a Guitar Center and it was my favorite Gibson there. I love that honeyburst too. Thanks! My understanding is that Koa is in the acacia family (or genus) and Koa is obtained in Hawaii whereas this acacia is found in other places like California and Australia. I know black acacia is often from Australia. I really wanted this in part because of the California connection. The sound is a lot like Mahogany to my ears but just a bit brighter and punchier bass (again to my ears).
Tman Posted July 7, 2016 Author Posted July 7, 2016 Wow! THAT'S a thing of beauty! 'Grats Tman... Thanks man! I played it so much last night that I woke up at 2AM with it in my arms.

Rambler Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 How does the Acacia b/s color the tone (too lazy to look it up). Rambler
Dave F Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Nice looking! Looks like it has some flaming going there.
fortyearspickn Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 How does the Acacia b/s color the tone (too lazy to look it up). Rambler From what I've read (and heard) - Koa (and I assume Acacia) is in between Rosewood and Mahogany in tone.
Dave F Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 From what I've read (and heard) - Koa (and I assume Acacia) is in between Rosewood and Mahogany in tone. Just my opinion ( and my hearing is not that great), I think it's between Mahogany and Maple
Tman Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Just my opinion ( and my hearing is not that great), I think it's between Mahogany and Maple My hearing is now probably worse (I'm blaming statins) and I agree with this. I will compare, all recording variables being equal, with a rosewood and walnut. Don't have a J200 sitting around to compare with maple but should be interesting anyway.
fortyearspickn Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 My hearing too, is not what it once was. I based my 'cross between Mahogany and Rosewood' comment on the informal, un-scientific internet research I did looking at luthier sites, before I purchased my J45Koa.

I based my 'cross between Mahogany and Rosewood' comment on the informal, un-scientific internet research I did looking at luthier sites, before I purchased my J45Koa. And that is probably more valid than any opinion I may have! At least you have a bit of research behind it. I looked at one site that showed it with a lot of mids and a lot like mahogany and there was a nice graph showing the spectrum for various woods. I can't find it now though.
Tman Posted July 8, 2016 Author Posted July 8, 2016 Found it from AGF. I am assuming (not ever smart to do) that acacia behaves as koa does.
