tenser Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 a friend offered me a vintage Gibson SG for $800 - the serial number 855*** means it can be '66 or '69, but since the headstock logo is missing the dot on i - variation introduced in 68 - think this is a 69. - to me it seems a SG Special converted with humbuckers - the humbuckers are classic 57, not sure year fo them - i didn't remove the pickguard, but i suspect the holes can accommodate P-90 - the truss rod cover seems non original - also the knobs are not original for that age (69 used to have witch hat knobs if i'm correct) - the neck has a small crack, not deep on the E tuner, but it doesn't have repairs in the joint or so - the body could have been refinished but we don't know for sure - the original vibrato has been replaced but a fixed tailpiece - i didn't open the electronics so i don't know if they are original - the tuners don't seem original what do you think?
OldCowboy Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Definitely player grade - nothing wrong with that. What's it worth to you? If you like it a bunch, $800 is probably OK, but as a companion rather than an investment.
