Ledbelly
I'd like to fit black covers to the P90s on my Wildkat but the stock covers seem to be soldered on. Is it ok just to get the soldering iron out and remove them and put black covers on? Has anybody done this?

Zentar
Several boutiques make black covered dog ear P90s. Why not put some 1st rate p90s in that gorgeous Wildkat? Why put the same ho hum Epi p90s back in?

Why put the same ho hum Epi p90s back in? I had my Wildkat into my luthier a few years ago for some other things, and he suggested Lollar P90's, since, according to him at least, they were a "drop in" replacement. Might want to give them a look if you're going to be replacing the p/u's.

If so, what is your impression of them vs the stock Epis?

Stock Epis don't compare to Lollar, Gibson. Kent Armstrong, SD or any other aftermarket p90. Go test a Gary Clark Epi Casino with Gibson P90s and see for yourself. Gibby P90s are pricey though. I installed Kent Armstrong P90s in my Casino and it was night and day difference. The KAs are affordable yet they are fantastic PAF quality. If so, what is your impression of them vs the stock Epis? Thanks for the compliment on the 'Kat. Yep, those are the Lollar's. Unfortunately, I don't have any "before/after" recordings for comparison, and it's been a few years since I had the p/u's replaced, but I do remember at the time making a mental note to self that the Lollar's sounded much better than the stock Epi's. Zentar's post pretty much hits the nail on the head though.

Dennis G
Thanks Dennis G, your Wildkat's color is sweet , official color name? Transparent Orange. Bought it through Sweetwater 5 years ago. Special run on the color, although I've also seen pix of red ones, aqua color, etc. on occasion as well as the usual "natural". I really dig the TO however. And thanks again, the guitar is one of my fav's.
Ledbelly
Thanks for the replies. You've got me thinking now that I will go for new PUs and do a rewire at the same time. I haven't come across Lollars, I was thinking of Seymour Duncans. What does anybody think of these? I have SD humbuckers on my White Lightning and they are excellent. BTW, love your Kat Dennis G. Pesh
Agree with the above - if you've gotta take them out to take the covers off, might as well put something new and better in, like the Lollar, Gibson, or maybe even a custom set? Find a smaller pickup maker and find out what they've got, too!

I put SD Classics in my Dot a few years ago and it made a world of difference, FWIW, but I also rewired it and put in new pots, switches, etc as well. As for rewiring your 'Kat, do a search on the MLP forum. There's a thread over there (a bit old now) about how to rewire your 'Kat and improve the sound. I haven't done this, but others on the forum swear by it.
tweed2
When I got my Casino, several years ago, I was in that groove of "upgrade the pickups". Everything that I bought got the pickups replaced. I live in Jason Lollars neighborhood and contacted him about rewinding the stock Epi PUs. I'd read that he was doing that quite a bit, chrome cover to black, including the rewind. Turns out that it cost more to do that, than new "aftermarkets". I went with replacement "Biltoft" P-90s (great PUs, BTW) and Jason finally stopped "rewinding" the Epis. I was lucky enough to find a set of used Lollar P-90s, and replaced the Biltofts. They sound so good in the Casino, knowing what I know now, I'd spring for new ones on any Epi that uses P-90s. They are an excellent pairing with hollow-body Epis. The Biltofts went to an Epi Zephyr Blues Deluxe, again a great match. As far as other great aftermarket P-90s, I was impressed with the Kent Armstrongs. I tried 6 different brands of P-90s, as replacements and budget-wise, I liked those the best. But, if you want the best, get some Lollars.
Ledbelly
Rewired the 'Kat over the weekend. Used RG174 AU wire. What a difference, really bright, almost Gretschy. Might not bother replacing the pickups now, have to see how it goes. Thanks for the input Guys!
iankinzel
Ironically, the P90s on the Wildkat are probably the only Epi where the P90s tend to be a bit underwhelming. The stock Epi P90s on a Casino, a 339 or even the bolt-on LP Special hold their own against much more expensive competition, but the P90s on the Wildkat are voiced much darker for whatever reason. I don't know what the reasoning was. Maybe it's the wiring?
SG player
The Wildcat is a great guitar, an original €pi design. I put P90 black covers on my VS Casino , that will help you

SG player
Yes, very easy . They were soldered but a quick hit with a soldering iron broke the joint easily .
