BluesKing777 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 I did a recording of Bob D's 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' using my (out of date?) vocal harmony pedal... TC Helicon Play Acoustic pedal, Shure SM58, Martin D18 Aura guitar direct, no TC effect, not many verses for this one either: https://soundcloud.com/bk7-3/knockin7 BluesKing777.
pappy Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 BK, one of my all time favorite songs, and you did it great justice. Dylan would be proud of your rendition. Fantastic job!
Buc McMaster Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Very well done, BK! That harmony pedal seems to work on some stuff better than others and it does work quite well on this tune. I could never get next to gadgets......I have enough trouble with just getting a laptop and a microphone to work well together.
BluesKing777 Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Thanks for the replies! Yes, I am a sucker for a gadget if it says 'guitar' anywhere on it. We agonize over a few dollars here and there with guitars, which generally hold their value and sometimes increase! But we blow good money on junk with a shelf life of about 3 months - the gadget above in point. It is already superseded by the Boss pedal that BBG posted with lots of lovely new bits that I may have to buy on Payday, so I gave this old worn out one one a last blast! The jury is out on whether to use this anywhere, but I have lots of fun getting the grey lumps shuffling around figuring it out. You don't have to use the harmony bits all night, but the basic sound with a small amount of reverby delayish processing and the DI out is very handy. Also good to get your personal vocal and guitar level balance before somebody else does it for you! (And the Martin Aura guitar I played on the track could fall in to the same category - it is a 'gadget guitar' plugged directly in to the vocal gadget, no mic, normally a recipe for real yukkiness and potential ugliness, and I think it sounds great. I used an Aura image based on an old Neumann KM84 mic. Really pleased). I don't like the 'Body Rez' that comes with the old gadget and the new Boss appears to be the same kind of thing.... blindboygrunt Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Have to be honest and say when I seen anyone doing knocking on heavens door I kinda think 'ah again!?' But you did it great man. Listened twice . You got it BK. Hey , what's the differences between the boss and the acoustic play that would tempt you ? I just reckoned they were the same thing with a different jacket on.

Thanks BBG! I did think the same about the tune, but I saw some late night show with half an eye open and this band got a light groove going before 4 incredible soul type singers did a verse and chorus each and the chorus together at the end! It was stunning and they weren't a regular group, just for the gig. No idea of the name, apologies. That was the idea. I like the look of the Boss gadget because of the functions often used assigned to real working knobs instead of the TC digital ones - you have to turn it from a digital readout that you have no tactile feel for, whereas the volume knobs on the Boss for example, are fairly self explanatory - turn it all the way up for metal and to a half for country! I should do more internet research - there are probably classier units out there than Boss pedals, but I like the IDEA of the controls. BluesKing777.
EuroAussie Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Nice one BK. But you say no TC effect but I do hear harmonies there, which one did you use - Hi/lo?
BluesKing777 Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Nice one BK. But you say no TC effect but I do hear harmonies there, which one did you use - Hi/lo? Thanks EA! By no effect, I meant on the guitar - straight through Martin Aura guitar. Vocal effects were just presets 1, 2, 3 in that order on the choruses. Aura guitar is exclusive to Martin unfortunately - if Gibson made a J45 and L-00 with the same vintage mics and imaging as the Martin, they would be MINE ..Ha Ha Ha Ha evil cackle. BluesKing777.
BluesKing777 Posted July 14, 2016 Author Posted July 14, 2016 Ha ho ho... PS. If you listen during the part where I stop playing (approx. 3/4 through the tune), you can hear two fairly loud clicks as I turn the harmonies OFF on the TC and then switch to another setting! Would be better with softer buttons that don't clck in this instance, but most times you hit harmony button probably as you play and sing louder for choruses and don't notice. Wonder if the Boss unit has this click sound? BluesKing777.
