JuanCH Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 Hi all, I am faced with this call it problem. I have a Rickenbacker 330 Fireglow which I seldom use but love the sound and the shape of the guitar, I have 3 acoustics (Guild D-1212, Gibson Dove and Gibson J200) most of the time I play my acoustics since it´s way much simpler than pluggin the amp, I would like to go for a hummingbird ( I would like some Mahogany sound) I was asked to trade my Ricky for a Hummingbird, I have to pay like 500 dollars on top of my Ricky to get the Bird. Somedays I say go for it and some days I have second thoughts about the trade in. If I let my Ricky go I have a Tele if someday I want to tear down the house; but I do enjoy my acoustics. I know some of you had second thoghts when it comes to trading instruments, what would you do guys? Thanks all for the advice!!
vacamartin Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 You have a T_Bucket?.....If the Bird passes your inspection, I'd trade the Ricky for the Bird!
58 Relic Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 I'll be honest I went to a local store to trade in one of my electrics towards a J200 or Hummingbird . What happened , I came out of the store with my electric , I tried a j200 and hummingbirds but when it came to the crunch I couldn't let it go , nothing wrong with the guitars they were lovely and I really wanted a Hummingbird , came to the conclusion it's one of the family . But I did buy another guitar though without the trade . If you really want to trade do it , but think carefully beforehand not afterwards . Good luck
sbpark Posted July 15, 2016 Posted July 15, 2016 If you don't play the Rickenbacker I'd do the trade, but that's just me telling you what I would do. I recently sold off quite a few guitars, including some really nice vintage electrics and vintage amps and a 2012 J200, and old Sho-Bud pedal steel, a few SG's, Teles, an old National lap steel from the 1930's, etc. After the dust settled and kept 1 Telecaster and 3 acoustics. The way I am, if I'm not playing them, what's the use? I hate the word "collector", and don't like having stuff around just to have them. I paid off all my credit card debt and put a chunk toward my student loan debt. No regrets at all, aside from missing the J200 a little bit, but still I'd probably sell that guitar again right now if I had it since I have a J45 that got played over the J200 9 times out of 10. All I have left to sell is a gorgeous sunburst 1976 P Bass. If you'll still have an electric after selling the Rick, and you don't play it much, then I'd say part with it toward something you'll use more often.
OldCowboy Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I'd do the trade. My only hesitation would be deciding between a 'bird and a J-45.
Rambler Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 You have two maple bodies flattops -- need both? If it were up to me Id trade the Guild; do not care for 12-string dreds (mmv).
kidblast Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 trades with stores is always, always, always a screw job. personally with the deal you mentioned,, I'd say you're about to get boned.. Dude.. Walk.. keep the ric, (they are what they are..) At the very least, be patient list and it for a fair price (do that and it WILL sell) and see what you can do with the proceeds after, that is, if you really want to move on from it. Trades IMO are three swings and a walk to the dug out, every time. in the mean while... play the crap out of your J200 and the dove.. don't get much better than that anyway. Once your ricky sells, you'll then have some cash to play with, at least you know that you wont be getting gak'd in the process. /r
sbpark Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Trades IMO are three swings and a walk to the dug out, every time. I guess the trade I just made recently, where I traded straight across my 2013 SG Standard for a Martin HD28 was three swings and a miss on my end. Hmm. And I thought I got a great trade in that one. Should have known better I guess.
zombywoof Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Bwahahaha - Casey at the bat. It all depends on the local market and the store. The variable you are, of course, not privy to is what the store paid or gave for the trade in. In that sense you are most likely getting screwed because I can guarantee you are going to be into that guitar for a whole lot more than the store has in it. But no matter how much I think a store's main concern should be to make me happy, they are in business to snag as much profit as they can on an instrument. The owner of my favorite little shop once told me you know you have a deal when nobody is overjoyed with it. Then there is the market and depending on where you are it may simply be a lot easier for the store to turn an electric over than an acoustic. Smaller shops in particular cannot afford to be sitting on instruments. I do not have a clue as to the relative values of the guitars you are talking about but all in all it does not make a whole lot of sense to hold on to a guitar that you just like the look of but do not play a whole bunch. On the other hand, some of the worst mistakes I have made were selling or trading off guitars.
MissouriPicker Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 Trades are a last resort for me when the guitar I'd be trading is a high-dollar guitar. Even on Craig's List you've got a chance of making a couple hundred more. Trades where I lost 75-100 on a cheapie for something I really want are okay for me, but I won't make a trade where I lose several hundred..... I'd probably try to sell the electric instead of trading it. I know how severe the "itch to buy" can be (especially on something you really want), but maybe if you give it some time you'll end-up with a few hundred more bucks......and j45s and Hummingbirds will still be around.

Murph Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I would trade with a store if I found a guitar I wanted, and the deal was just "Close". I have a wall full of electrics I never play anymore, but don't want to deal with the hassle of selling one myself because of the army of morons that will attract. I have a very low tolerance for morons. And another thing. Get off my lawn......
fortyearspickn Posted July 16, 2016 Posted July 16, 2016 I'm always amazed when I look at the pages of Used Acoustics on GC's website - how varied the prices are on J45 standards that appear to be five years old or younger, even when their condition is graded as "Excellent'. I think most all people put a 'markup' on the guitar (car, dog, lawnmower) they want to sell - based on what they think it's worth to them only. Sometimes a very small markup, sometimes a very large one. Like insurance companies dealing with customers who have had a loss - they try to get the customer to understand the 'emotional value' isn't covered. Just because your plain silver ring was your 'engagement ring' when your fiancè couldn't afford anything more - doesn't mean the pawn shop is going to shell out Cubic Zirconium bucks when your husband runs off with his new, 'double wide wife'. If you think your well kept J45 is worth $500 more than GC is willing to give you - "Here's Your Sign" ! That might be the value you can assign as 'how much you really love that guitar'! And if it's at barrier- it begs the question " how much do you really want to get rid of it?" Don't go on arguing with the GC manager about how he's trying to screw you - you might become another soldier in the army Murph described above.
