kent04 Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Started my first build which includes homemade p90 pickups. you can see my progress here http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/129730-new-build-es-225-semi-hollow/ How necessary is grounding the electric circuit to the bridge in solid body guitars? i'm a huge fan of floating bridges, and this guitar will be outfitted with one. i know in archtops the ground is usually wired into the tailpiece, but why? Do the strings necessarily have to be part of the ground? cant i just run a ground line from each pickup to each pot and finish at the input jack? or just install a nail or screw in the electronics cavity and ground to it? i've never wired a guitar before, so detailed explanations are greatly appreciated. thanks in advance
Rabs Posted July 18, 2016 Posted July 18, 2016 Well im not the most electronically minded on here... But yes.. The way I understand it, the player acts as the ground for the guitar... If you don't ground the bridge then you don't have a proper ground for it... and it will probably hum... In fact that's how I test if I got the ground done properly... By plugging it in, turning the amp up and listening to make sure that the hum stops (or decreases) when you touch the bridge or strings.
