J-45 expert / j-45 2006 owner?

Recommended Posts

Hello guys!

I hope you are great! The thing is that I bought this 2006 J-45 and the previous owner changed the pick up, and I want to instal the orginal pick up, so I can take the guitar back to its original state. I have asked 2 or 3 times in this forum, though privite messages and public topics and I have never got a straight and accurate answer. Actually I called to Gibson Customer Service once, long ago and they couldn't tell me. So if some of you have a J-45 from the 2006 please let me know whats the factory pick up installed. Any other information, like a way to figure this out is wellcome too, of course!

From what I know, and some of this forum users have told me, the pick up would be a "L. R. baggs element", with a volume control. From the pictures I have seen, the sistem has that little "black nylon bag" that holds the battery, installed in the heel, where the body and the neck get united.

If it really the pick is the "L. R. baggs element with volume control" which one of this is the right one?

This one?

Or maybe this one? (I'm personaly more partial to this, due to the "chrome" color... I think I remember a silver plug sticking out from the 2006 models)

Or maybe another model I am not even considering?

Thank you all guys in advance!

My guess would be the first link. Thats what (was) in my J45 Standard, but mine is a 2014.

My original J45 Standard 2009 had the LR Baggs Element (no volume control on the guitar...you controlled it with your amp/speaker). I'm assuming that's the basic Baggs element. I think the one with the volume control is an upgrade as far as the control dial goes, but I don't know if it's supposed to supply a better tone.

The pickup from my 2008 J-50 looks exactly like the photo in your first link. It says "e element" and "rule the stage" at the bottom and it has the same kind of volume control, pouch and battery connector.

Why anyone would want to install one of these is a mystery to me though, when I first got the guitar I had the luthier remove it when I did a setup. I thought it sounded terrible, but then I can't stand under-saddle pickups anyway. ;)

in 2006 they used Fishman. Not LR Baggs. That came later. The Fishman unit didn't have a volume control.

This was part of the reason they switched to LR Baggs. Part

My 2015 J45. Has the first model fitted with the brass coloured end pin jack , so I doubt if it was that one in 2006 could be the second , have you tried contacting LRBaggs directly .

Hello Keith!

Yeah, we discuss this before... but I can't be sure about that because J-45 owners tells me that they have the L.R. Baggs! Thanks for your answer Keith! I hope you are great!

My 2006 standard has a volume control wheel in the sound hole. Not sure of the brand/model

Bingo a J-45 owner,

Moosesyr, can you please clarify this to everyone???? what's the pick up you have there? Does the plug has a copper or silver color to it? Would be great if you could take a picture of the inside of the guitar and send it... would it be too much to ask? Maybe I would have to wait until you change strings!?

Thanx for your answer anyway!

See what I mean guys?

Keith, (Which opinion I really respect because his knowledge), say Fishman and no volume control, 2006 owner say "volume control". This is exactly my problem I can't get an accurate answer because I don't have a 2006 near so I can check.

Someone can please confirm the information?

Here I leave a picture that has a copper plug, but in my mind has to be silver.

Mines an 05 and has the fishman with no sound hole volume

If I was you I'd be happy that it wasn't the fishman . Not a great pickup and no sound hole volume is very annoying

Here are other examples all of then 2006 and nothing clear,

This one states that has a L.R. Baggs Element Active, from what I can see it has a silver plug

http://sp.j-guitar.com/uploads/2013/r/productphoto_577de81f-8120-46.jpg

This one a fishman, it has the tipical "red and black" wire and a very obvious silver plug

http://sp.j-guitar.com/uploads/1088/r/is198282461955443.jpg

http://sp.j-guitar.com/uploads/1088/r/is438282461955387.jpg

And yet another L.R. Baggs no visible wire and an unclear plug color (looks more like silver to me)

http://sp.j-guitar.com/uploads/1983/r/productphoto_578b8560-d670-42.jpg

No information of the pick up here

http://www.mikigakki.com/img_system/item_20151019j4506_1

And this one looks like it has a "only black" wire

http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ucUAAOSwYmZXINAz/s-l1600.jpg

This one only say "Elent Active PU" I guess that's a L.R. Baggs Elent Active (Red and black wire and silver plug)

http://www.apple-guitars.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/productphoto_53c12c93-8514-4a.jpg

And lastly I saw this pick up, I guess this would be the Fishman on the early 2000 models, right?

https://reverb.com/item/569480-fishman-acoustic-matrix-natural-1-pickup

So guys, Fishman Acoustic Matrix Natural 1? or L.R. Baggs Element Active? Black or Black and Red? Copper or Silver Plug? I guess the 2006 owners can help????

Comparing the two pick ups the L.R. Baggs:

http://www.acousticon.com/element%20system.jpg

and the Fishman:

https://reverb.com/item/569480-fishman-acoustic-matrix-natural-1-pickup

As far as I remember the Fishman comes with a red and black wire "braided" and the LR "unbraided" would that be enough to say that the 2006 has a LR with volume control? I am not sure guys... I guess I have to wait to see if @moosesyr wants to share some pictures!

Thanks blindboygrunt,

Actually I watched not long ago a video comparing some L.R. to a Fishman. I personaly didn't like the sound of the Fishman, I liked more the L.R. Baggs. But anyway I just want the guitar on its original state, does not matter the sound of the pick up. Actually I use it only to record and I do it with studio microphones.

I was sure that the 2005 has the Fishman, actually it has a iron plate holding the battery, right?

Thanks sbpark,

The thing is that between that years 2005 - 2008, like Keith said, Gibson switched between Fishman and L.R. Baggs :/

Thanks for your contribution MissouriPicker,

You are right, I am sure Gibson switched from Fishman to L.R. Baggs. The problem is that I do not know what year that happened. Surely, as you said, the 2009 comes with the L.R. Baggs and the 2005 model with the Fishman... but what about 2006? the 2007? My guess is that the 2008 comes with a L.R. Baggs too.

Thanks Boyd,

Yeah, like I said in the last answer, my guess is that Gibson has been using L.R. Baggs elements since somewhere arround 2006 - 2008

Hello Relic,

That's a very clever suggestion, I have to admit that idea never crossed my mind. I think I will try that: contacting directly Fishman and L.R. Baggs! Thanks a lot for your suggestion!

OK...I have a 2006 J-45 Flame Maple LTD. I don't know what pick-up it has. The battery bag is in a pouch on the neck block and there is a volume control inside the sound hole. Red and black wires going to the battery and it looks like black wires on the switch. Somewhere in the body I think I see a silver shielded cable. The endjack was all chrome..I changed the outer "pin" to gold to match the tuners. If there is a way I can tell the make without removing the strings and the saddle, let me know how and I will look.

May I ask why this is such a big deal? Not being insulting, just curious what is causing this passion and motivation for finding what exact (albeit inferior) pickup was in the guitar when it was new in 2004?

If you're considering selling it and worried that the lack of original pickup will affect resale value, I doubt that would be the case, given that either pickup you're thinking was OEM equipment in this guitar aren't well liked anyway.

Disagree with this. I have a 2014 and it has a brass endpin jack and it's an LR Baggs Element. I took it out of the guitar, so I have a pretty good idea what the endpin and rest of the guts look like. 2015 was no the first years they started using these.

Sure Sbpark,

Not a problem at all. The answer is plain simple: I am just that kind of obsesive guy who like to have the guitar in its original state... like when someone buy an old model car and they restore it.

Thanx gearbasher,

Well I don't think there is another way to know it... maybe in the Owner's manual??? If not I can wait until you change the strings... you can take a picture when you do it...

My Iphone pics are too big post. I'll work on it. Silver jack, black nylon battery holder, small black turnwheel for volume with no markings. I'll be changing strings and take better pics with a camera. I bought it used on Ebay from a guy in Bozeman who said he won it at raffle at a Jackie Greene concert there. It was originally signed by JG but I removed that. The owner wasn't really a player so I don't think he installed the pup, but I don't know.
