BluesKing777 Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 I just recorded a solo version of Eric Clapton's "Alberta". Sometimes the wonderful all mahogany 1944 Martin 0-17 is the only choice! https://soundcloud.com/bk7-3/alberta777 BluesKing777.

BluesKing777 Posted August 5, 2016 Author Posted August 5, 2016 Ain't it so! Those 0-hogs are filthy good Yes, thanks Vacamartin, my 0-17 has THE sound I like and I would play it way more if it had a slightly wider nut like the 30s models. It is an old guitar generally great but with the old guitar foibles, with tricky geometry after years of people making it playable for themselves, and a bit hard to play some things. Nut could have about 3 dog hairs worth removed and I prefer to play it capoed up a few frets, but it loses a bit of the sound of the recording above..... But it sounds great, so I don't want to touch it.... BluesKing777.
EuroAussie Posted August 5, 2016 Posted August 5, 2016 Yeah, that was real tasty BK, enjoyed that, would love to learn me a Clapton unplugged tune. When i was in Adelaide over Xmas I played a 50's 0-17 and fell in love with it, remember the neck felt nice and thick and tone was quite responsive and suitably grumpy.
BluesKing777 Posted August 5, 2016 Author Posted August 5, 2016 Thanks! It is WAY louder than it looks like it should be, but it is as if it was designed for playing in front of a computer. Perfect size! I get the reflections of the sound off the screen, and it isn't awkward to sit like that, as it is with a dread. But that tone..... I may have captured some of it in the recording, but nothing beats playing 70 odd year old mahogany in the flesh. This 44 model was the last year of scalloped bracing before they went straight and tall braced... BluesKing777.

Hot damn these l'il hogs from Martin have a vibe \:D/
BluesKing777 Posted August 6, 2016 Author Posted August 6, 2016 I felt the same way. I opted for a custom 0-15 from LA Guitars with the wider specs at the nut and saddle. Hot damn these l'il hogs from Martin have a vibe \:D/ I have seen those from Ted mentioned a lot! Another one that I saw was a Custom 0-17 replica 30s model at MV, and then they had another Custom in black finish. Whoo. But mine was for sale online a couple of years ago and it had sat there looking good forever, so the price was dropped a lot, enough to entice the cash out of my wallet. Everything had been done to make it playable, and it was way cheaper than the Customs, so.... The 0-17, and 00-17 are reasonably priced for a vintage Martin, mainly because I think they are light fingerpickers really and most Martin buyers want the big belter! Even thought of as a 'student guitar'... I better go play it some more! BluesKing777.
