New Lariat or Used King Ranch

Ok, so here's my dilemma: Shopping for a new truck and have decided on an F-150. Nothing against the other trucks per se, the wife and I just prefer the F-150s. After shopping for several weeks, I've narrowed it down to 2 trucks... both are super crew cabs... a brand new 2016 Lariat and a used 2015 King Ranch.

Deets: While I don't have an out the door price on the King Ranch yet, we expect it to be around $1500 less than the Lariat. Almost all the features are identical except:

1. King Ranch has heated rear seats and steering wheel, massaging front seats, tinted windows in the front (Lariat only has the rear windows tinted), and a factory bed liner. Only 30K miles on it, so there is still 6k left on the bumper to bumper warranty, and most of the 5 year/60k powertrain and roadside assist warranties. It has the special King Ranch leather interior and a 5.0 L/302 V8 engine.

2. Lariat is brand new, carries the full manufacturer's warranty. It has all the features of the King Ranch, save those mentioned. It has the extended range fuel tank (700 miles to a fill up) and a fuel efficient 3.5L turbocharged DOHC V6.

Intangibles and research info:

The King Ranch is THE luxury truck in the F-150 Line. They retail for over 55k new (most are over 60K). While they are not the most expensive in the line, (the Platinum series tends to be more) they hold their value better than any truck (in 50k miles it will still be worth almost 40K). Outside of the 2013 models, the King Ranch is generally not easy to find- folks just don't seem to get rid of them much or often. Also, most of the used King Ranch trucks I've seen since i started looking have sold quickly. (the one we are looking at the the lot on 8/1). It is a freaking gorgeous truck in two tone Bronze Fire over Carribou and the King Ranch is my wife's favorite truck in the world. (not surprising, the Black Beauty is her favorite LP :) )

The Lariat is a GORGEOUS Ruby Red that goes really well with my new Santa gig. It's brand new and we think the interior, while not as posh, is a tad more comfortable. It will hold it's value ok over time, but nothing like the King Ranch. Does not have a bed liner, heated rear seats or steering wheel, or tinted front windows.

So... help me decide!!

For $1,500. more, I'd go with brand new. If you can afford that much, what's another $1,500. And you don't start out with 30k miles.... JMO.

That was exactly what we were thinking, as well.

We REALLY LOVE that King Ranch.... and this is truly a once in a lifetime deal. I spoke with the manager this morning and he sound rightly peeved over the quote. said we had to come see them TODAY or no deal.

My uncle just got a new F-onefiddy with the massaging seats. I got to be honest: it felt kinda wrong.

Having said that, one thing to keep in mind with the seats with "features", is that it may not be as comfortable as the same without, or hold up as well or be as comfortable with age.

5.0 V8 or turbo V6? Hmm. Sorry, no help there.

Really, both are a LOT of money and real nice. Neither is an investment, or will hold it's value. So in reality, you are spending money because it's what you want to spend it on and is expected to be worth the money because it brings you happiness in owning and using it. The more you LIKE it, the more value.

Answer: get the one you just LIKE the most. Also, what the wife likes holds a lot of value as well.

Update:

Out the door price on the King Ranch turned out to be even cheaper than we thought; also the "bottom line cash out the door" Lariat price was dropped. I was able to also trade a Santa visit for a little more off .

Difference is now around $900.00

We have voted amongst the family.... we have to go writ a check tonight.

Voting results among my family (100% of precincts reporting):

King Ranch- 2 (Wife, oldest Son)

Lariat - 2 (Me, youngest Son)

A decision has been made. We are off to write checks and do the needful......

Pics and results later.....

Read this at night and you've made up your minds. But, I'm with RC, I love the heated seats and the luxury. I'd get the King. But then I'm looking at F-150's also. The wife and I decided on a Platinum but not the color yet. Maybe White. But we're waiting to pay her car off first.

Good idea... We DO love a King Ranch.... and it was such a lucky break that this deal came our way....!

They both look like big red trucks to me. But if the price difference close, I'd buy new. The more "fuel efficient" V6 sounds like a plus too.

Yessir. Hard to argue with a larger gas tank and a more fuel efficient engine. And yeah, they are both Santa trucks... one is rust red and one is more candy apple :)

Lariat

You know, we saw a demo video today comparing the King Ranch to the Lariat. The guy doing the demo basically said the only difference between the King Ranch and the Lariat is cosmetic. The features are identical. msp_thumbup.gif

You 'over the pond' guys make me smile often... [biggrin]

One can only speculate at the CO2 emissions of these 5 litre oil-aholics...

We UK ites feel lucky to have a range of 2 litre 4 cyl cabbies from the likes of Mitsubishi, Isuzu and Toyota... [thumbup]

Our fuel duties are punitive to 'discourage' most kinds of profligate auto enjoyment... <_<

But many of us drool often at Auto Americana...particularly the shiny paint... [biggrin]

I have been repairing, rebuilding and modifying US sports cars for years.

I often faced the criticism of those unfamiliar with US cars. Typical stereotypes: high gas consumption, bad handling, the automatic transmission is lazy, etc.

Well...the stock V8 '79 Mustang III with 5-liter engine, - after the rebuild - had average fuel consumption of 9 liters/100km. That's a figure many of today's 2.0 liter cars would envy. In reality - not by false factory data.

Those 70s US cars I worked with, had the same handling as any of the 70s European cars of the same level.

My Dad was the one who always laughed at my obsession of US cars. He always had German cars, very good ones. He even custom-ordered a G60-charged, 4WD Passat in early 90s. But, for some reason, in 2000 He bought a Dodge Avenger and never went back to European cars.

Hello Versatile.

The US regulations are much stricter than ours.*

I remember those late-70s Fords. They were already running on unleaded fuel. They were equipped with multiple emission control devices: EGR, Thermactor, PCV.

My '85 Pontiac surpassed the best EU emission regulations in '96. Same with my current car: the '97 Dodge Avenger still in the best emission category, according to the local D.O.T.

*The EU/US regulations have different focus. US is much stricter on NOx and PM emissions. While EU focuses on COx. This is in the background of the recent VW scandal.

Bence.

So which one did you buy? I test drove a new F-150 Lariat myself recently. Being a Ford guy, you probably wouldn't want to hear what I bought after my comparison shopping, though.

Actually, I'd LOVE to hear not only what you bought, but your research and reasons for why!!

We bought a Ford because it seemed to be the best truck for the money, outside of the Chevy trucks. I love the Dodge trucks (not the little dialy knob instead of an actual shifter), the Nissan Titan is built in here in TN.

Well personally I would go new,,,until I seen it has the Ecoboost,,, I bought a new 2015 f150 with the 5.0.. I get 1000kms to a tank of fuel.. With the extra options you definitely need to get the king ranch!!!!!! Don't get a Ecoboost!!!!

Why not the ecoboost? All the reviewers just gush about this engine... even the ones who really don't like the truck LOVE the engine....??

What do you know that I didn't find out?
