Hi Mickey,

I have a Yamaha THR10 which is great, I've even used it for band practice and small gig's without any problems. It can be made to behave surprisingly like a valve amp.

I've never tried any of the others that you mentioned, but I think I'd like to give the Marshall a try just to see if the ones modelled sound anything like a "proper" Marshall.

A friend has the Fender. So bad I've banned it from my house. Hate it, can't fully turn off the effects, nasty pots with all the adjustment in 1/4 of the sweep, has a tuning function that tunes a quarter step flat, sounds worse than those tiny Marshall battery powered amps.

Haven't tried any of the ones on your list but I have a VOX ad30

Has a pre amp tube, tons of amp models (most sound pretty good with tweaking on the low, mid , high

Reverb is pretty good

I actually usually by pass on the built in effects but have dabbled with the chorus a bit (only one I have saved in a bank)

Has built in attenuation

10" speaker

Use it around the house and for jams with buddies (I don't gig)

I'd at least add it to your list to check out (got mine $100 used Canadian)

Thanks for the replies. Farnes barnes comments re the fender dont shine it in the best light. I mostly play hard rock. Acdc tone . I have the tsl60 which does that fine. Im just looking something to mess about with. Not really a big effects user but would like to get good cleans to modern gain very easy at low volume with no need for a tubescreamer. Im also getting a fender bassbreaker combo but this one needs to stay quieter. Cheers

There's a meanwhile discontinued Fender Mustang I V.1 in my room right behind me. Turning FX off is no problem, the pots work as nasty as with any "real" Fender [rolleyes] , the tuner works fine. The tone is what you would expect from an 8" speaker. :) That thing has a nice crunch and gain like hell. [biggrin]

I also have two Orange Crush amps, a CR20L and a CR20LDX. Either are discontinued meanwhile, too. They are "real" solid-state amps, no emulators, the LDX with built-in FX and tuner. The FX are presets limited to level adjustment and have very audible latencies, in particular as a pre-delay of the chorus. There's always a volume leap upwards when switching to distortion by hand - no footswitch ability -, and gain depends fully on the clean channel setting. I think the current ones have footswitch abilities.

With the band I always use my Behringer V-Amp rack gear that was discontinued some years ago.

I think if I was looking for something new, the Blackstar ID series are what I'd try first.

Check out the Vox3-G2, 3 watts, battery (up to 10 hrs) or adapter, great clean tones and decent Drive tones.

They also make a Vox Mini 5, 5 watt version that can run at 5 watts or .5 watts or .1 watts.

My brother has one of the Mustang amps. It doesn't have the problems with the effects that you mentioned but I agree that the tuner is junk. It sounds a lot better than the little battery powered amps IMO but not very good compared to a decent "real" amp

They are a waste of money for anything I would be interested in doing, but not as bad as your comment suggests IMO.

To be fair, I think both of us would give a majority of modeling amps a thumbs down review.

I have two mustangs with hours of playing time on them. I would suggest, if you are going FENDER get the Mustang III (it is IMHO better than any of the other amps suggested, -- yes I've tried just about all of them.) The LCD control vs. the limited on board controls (or using FUSE to get into the deeper edit functions), the added wattage - 40 vs 100 - and upgraded speaker on the III is well worth the extra $$$$

I have not tried the Marshall CODE. These sound pretty good from the demos but the Fenders will do the "Fender clean" better than the CODES will..

The CODES are more faithful to the sounds of the plexis/JCM/ETC.. but the wont do the Fender Cleans quite as good as the MIII
