merciful-evans Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 A question to you luthiers: Would you think this would be a suitable starting point for a 1st build project? http://www.stewmac.com/Materials_and_Supplies/Bodies_and_Necks_and_Wood/Electric_Guitar_Bodies_and_Necks_and_Wood/Electric_Guitar_Necks/Through-body_Guitar_Neck.html I happened across this quite by chance. I didn't know StewMac offered them. I ask for future reference only. I'm thinking ahead to my retirement in a few years time. thanks -evans
Rabs Posted August 17, 2016 Posted August 17, 2016 Hmm.... Well I was going to say yes, but then I saw the price :o That is way expensive.. Does look nice though... What I would say is... You really should do a test build first.... Spending that much and then getting it wrong will be painful.... (I know all to well about that).. So id say, get some cheap wood, do some testing, try some things out.. THEN when you are happy you know what to do then go for some nice wood.....

That is sensible advice. Cheers Rabs.
btoth76 Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 No! You can't get the cookies, until You didn't eat the stew. That would be too easy, most of the really challenging steps are skipped. You could also buy a guitar body and neck then... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/GUITAR-AND-BASS-BUILD-UK?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 Bence.

I think I might cope with everything else ok.
Rabs Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Its the prospect of making the neck that worries me! I think I might cope with everything else ok. That's what I thought when I first started... And its not really any harder than doing anything else, the hardest part for me was getting the tenon and pocket right (which is why I then did two neckthrough builds :)).... You could just find a discarded pallet or something like that and practice.... and that's all you need to do, practice just once or twice.. Once to get the idea, and maybe the second or third time to get it all right. I was really lucky when I started, I found a local joinery company who makes really big wooden stuff, like staircases and large frames and the like... They have a shed load of large offcuts and I was able to buy that really cheap.... The one thing I did do was watch as many Youtube guitar build videos as I could... that REALLY helped me.
Rabs Posted August 18, 2016 Posted August 18, 2016 Yep. The price is the downside alright. That is sensible advice. Cheers Rabs. The one thing I do, do is buy my fretboards pre-slotted... That makes it way easier for me.. These boards even come with inlays and binding http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Short-Scale-Rosewood-Pre-slotted-Guitar-Fingerboards-FBG-/131840349585?var=&hash=item1eb24c1591:m:mw5Y_GgMqWabYBputiV8xyA But I have mostly used these boards http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/bassbar1/m.html?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEFSXS%3AMESOI&_trksid=p2053788.m1543.l2654

Nice looking ebony pieces too.
Pesh Posted August 25, 2016 Posted August 25, 2016 You're paying a lot for the convenience of having it all put together for you. I'd say go and get the parts separately and get some experience in putting it together and carving it for yourself
