Dealer price vs Bargain price

I have to say i really like Craigslist, have liked it for years and still check it out regularly. But recently, i was looking to get back into solid body opposed to hollow so put up my ads in neigherboring states (mass conn ri are all tiny) and watched the offers come flying in. The bummer was most wanted to either lowball me, or have endless email questions that never actually led to a deal, or they made a phony date to possibly trade. Of course, that day would come and go and id hear a myriad of excuses and it just seems like there are either a lot of clowns playing games or its all email spammers farming your address. Also had a few lowballers try to intimidate me into selling saying i better sell to them or else, i mean are people really this off their rocker?

Finally, after 4 months of this crap i ran into a dealer. He had exactly what i wanted, but he asked more than anyone else i was set to trade/sell with. He was a tough negotiator, i gave a little more than i wouldve liked, but the guitar i got back was mint, did not smell of ciggerettes, and it played flawlessly. Have any of you decided to trade to a dealer even if you didnt get the greatest deal also? I liked it because i got exactly what i wanted without the bs,one meeting and deal done.

A friend of mine told me i got burned, but i got exactly what i wanted without the bs, isnt that sometimes worth it to take the dealer price and forgo the bargain when you get what you want? I understand too that a dealer has to make a buck, so in the end giving a little more can sometimes be worth it to not have to deal with online fakes/crazies. Bargains are wonderful when you find em, but sometimes a dealer can help you unload a few things you no longer use for something you will use.

I trade still, just like I did in the 70s. Have never used any of the modern methods of eBay or Reverb or Craigslist or any of it at all. I get rid of what I want to get rid of, store get's rid of what they want to get rid of, and they get something else to sell. It's a win win win. Win. You know. Nothing wrong with trading, and as long as you got what you wanted and dealer did too, nobody got burned.

The guitar and most other markets have been 'skewed' by the internet over the last 10 years..

Courier deliveries and returns policies have become more and more sophisticated

On a personal level I find dealing with a huge internet warehouse, notwithstanding some great discounts, faintly nauseating....

For some folks the ideal is a friendly, non-pressure shop sales experience with trade-ins accepted and internet discount prices matched... [thumbup]

One can wax lyrical about perceived quality and personal service in matching unique requirements

If someone knows what they want...and is not to be satisfied by an off the shelf compromise...purchase price rightly becomes a secondary issue.... :-({|=

You can occasionally get a great deal from a regular retailer.

As for private selling, I am having a tough job selling a guitar right now using 2 free uk e-marts, Gumtree & PreLoved.

If I could find a needy genuine cause, I would even give it away; and yes I have looked!

What you have to remember when selling to a dealer is that they have to put tax on their selling price (at least they have to here in the UK)plus they need to make a living.

When I asked the shop that I use most about trading something in, the guy told me that he could only offer me the same amount for the trade in as he was going to give me as a discount (which was quite generous anyway) so in effect I'd be giving the old guitar to him, and he suggested that I sell it privately.

In the end if your happy with the deal, you've got a good deal, it's as simple as that.

every one wants a "killer deal"... and when you've got something to sell, you're now the pigeon they're trying to get that deal from.

so either way, you go to a local mom and pop and try to get a fair enough trade, or you deal with these jokers on Craigslist, pick your poison. At least with the trades w/a store is you don't have to deal with these morons on CL And eBay.. Been there, no thanks.

I've got a pal that does a lot of ebay transactions, but he's mostly sticking around in the $200 ~ $350 price break and shopping out some of the older runs of Korean / Japanese builds. He does ok, but in reality he's always look for his next pigeon where he can buy low, clean it up, and a few months later, sell high.

Similar experience here m-e...

I had success with Gumtree selling a rhythm box but would expect time wasters etc selling a decent guitar

Have given away guitars to charity shops like Oxfam and Cancer Research

There are two decent dealers near me who will 'sell on commission' taking 20%....IMO worth it to have one's guitar on a wall, photographed, web up-loaded and paid for with no hassle..

Thanks, G.A. I've been on the fence on this, and I think you just pushed me over. rct helped. Tried some local sales with no success. What, nobody plays guitar around here? Yeah, avoiding all that private party bs is worth quite a bit.
