Victory Pete
How does the walnut compare to maple?
E-minor7
The walnuts I've tried over the years - both G and M's - have been very promising, , , or fine sounding instruments. As I recall it, not maplish at all, but something 4th, , , or 5th I yet need to zoom in on for closer description. Reasons to believe the 200 body shape and walnut back'n'sides could be a highly attractive combo, , , though some here no longer would call it a J-
62burst
. . . and some here are surprised that the big '200 is not necessarily the loudest guitar, either- even in maple. Walnut might take it into a different direction. Might be best to play before pay. And see if you can bring a guitar you're familiar with.
BigKahune
. Walnut as I hear it - strong mids like maple, the high end isn't quite as bright as maple, and the low end is more toward rosewood. .
Jesse_Dylan
I think walnut will cut a bit more than maple (oddly enough). Of course, it depends upon the type of maple (flamed or quilted) and the type of walnut (claro and black? can't remember). Walnut sounds like a funny mix of maple, mahogany and rosewood to me. I really like it on my J-15. The SJ-100 is walnut, and it might be a different type of walnut from that used on a walnut SJ-200. I think the SJ-100 has slightly different proportions as well. Pretty tough to go wrong, unless you discover in the end that you don't want walnut and would have preferred maple or rosewood! However, the SJ-100 is also likely much lower in price than any walnut SJ-200.
Victory Pete
I went with this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-limited-edition-western-classic-mystic-acoustic-guitar?rNtt=western Musician's Friend has 2 of these left: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-custom-western-classic-2014-edition-120th-anniversary-model-acoustic-guitar Call and talk to Derek, he can give you a very good deal, I was very tempted but found the Rosewood model. The number for the Private Reserve department is up and to the left of the guitar.
MissouriPicker
From my perspective----My J100 Walnut compared to my maple Dove. The walnut is about as loud as far as volume is concerned, but the tone is quite different. I think the walnut sound is tighter and not as bright, but in contrast is a much deeper and for lack of a better word at the moment, a less "boomy" sound. The maple is a broader and more resonating tone. Both woods are excellent and either in the super jumbo body will likely be outstanding.
