New Gotoh tuners for 59' LG3

The orig Kluson tuners were shot so I bought a new set of Kluson replacements. They were badly bad, slipped, loosey goosey, too much play, etc.

Searched the net for 3-on-plate replacements, gave up and went with a new product from Gotoh SD90 Magnum Lock (3L/3R), featuring string locking, why not. When you run the new string through the post hole, decide how much winding you want, screw down the locking nut. It holds the string in place... less winding is always better. These tuners are freaking fabulous, smooth as they come with virtually no play, sticking, el infin.

Going from 3-on-plate, I did have to fill most of the old screw holes with FamoWood... and drill tiny new holes for the new tuners. The new bushings fit perfectly snug, of course this is a vintage players guitar, mojo allowed. Where I got the tuners and pics below:

Look nice, and I'm curious too about the locking thingy. Would love to see the whole guitar with the new tuners as well!

Also, do you have to fill the holes? I did some tuner replacing myself, direct fit, but they did leave some holes. I figured I'd just leave them, but maybe it's better to fill them.

I actually would leave the holes, maybe put the old screws in there so the holes don't get full of dirt/dust, just in case you decide to sell the guitar later and want to make it as close as possible to stock again.

That's what I figured. I might want to put the stock tuners back! Putting the screws back in is a fantastic idea that never occurred to me. I'll give that a try! That will keep it clean without having to fill/drill. Will look nicer, too.

Thank Dan Erlywine for that one, on some StewMac video I found on YouTube. I watch his videos every night to fall asleep - the cadence and pitch of his voice helps me fall asleep every night (not a bad thing).

Ha! That is a nice way to fall asleep! I wish I was better at this kind of stuff. I am planning to drill (!) holes to put in strap buttons soon. That will be a big step for me. :P Got a drill bit that "stops" (and is made for this purpose), some felt washers, and some stew-mac strap buttons. Maybe I should watch some videos too.

Not sure why you could not find three on a plate single line "Klusons." Stewmac, among others, sells them. Anyway, a nice job on the installation. I seem to constantly be either replacing or repairing tuners. I do it frequently enough that I keep a box full of old tuners on hand. I scrounged most of them, as well as bridges, tailpieces and such, off of basket case guitars which I scored for just a few bucks.

Hey zomby, my last two sets of Klusons will be in the trash bin for friday pickup on their trip to promised land.

These tuners are so much better than I would have ever dreamed, finally the LG3 is in tune for more than 5mins. When you put it down, it stays down. Mercy, what a thrill it is to play this jewel now.

The bottom Left pic (above) shows where I filled the previous screw holes with mahogany FamoWood (google for info). The pic was taken under a bright light so it looks lighter than the others which were taken in sunlight. The install went smooth, adds another layer of mojo, but the good kind.

Judging by that Blue Chip TD40 you're obviously a man of sophisticated breeding and impeccable taste, Tarrr.

And for those that have never used locking tuners, I have them on my Strat and they are awesome. If you get a chance to get some, get some.
