MorrisrownSal Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 But not to worry... FB rectifies the situation with a J45...
rct Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 We still do Brown Eyed Girl. Hate all you want, people that haven't moved for two sets get up and dance and suddenly want to Sha La La into yer mic, then they hang and drink some more. Win Win! Happy Birthday Van, Wavelength is still my favorite. rct

We also do Into the Mystic, which I enjoy a heck of a lot more. https://soundcloud.com/sal-from-chatham/into-the-mystic

I assume it's the guitar with the glued, screwed, tatoo'd bridge you showed in the Can't Get My Bridge Pins Out thread over the other place? [laugh] EDIT: oops, no, that wasn't yours, your's was tied. My bad. rct
Phelonious Ponk Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 I'll still play Brown Eyed Girl on request. It's a great song that has been overplayed by cover bands and radio. A fact that only matters to musicians and music snobs. It's good to remember that we're the entertainment, not the audience. With that said, I have lines I won't cross. Requests are free. Freebird is a hundred bucks. P

Last 15 minutes of last set, offer them Freebird, Stairway, or I'm Yer Captain/Closer To Home. 8.7 times out of ten they want the Grand Funk Railroad. The other 1.3 times we just tell them that was the winner. rct

bobouz Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 "Baby Please Don't Go" when Van was with Them, was the first time I heard him. Loved the song. Thought it was the Stones & was shocked to find it was this little red haired guy! Saw him live back in the early '70s & he totally sucked - appeared to be drunk & arrogant as all get out, but he seems to have mellowed nicely with age, and I still enjoy much of his work.
flatbaroque Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Happy Birthday Van. He'll be shouting the pub and playing everyone's requests tonight. The cuddly ol' curmudgeon.
E-minor7 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 That song represent one of the hugest live-moments in my life. And yes, there was green oil involved. It was the late 70's, I was young and attended an indoor concert with a couple of friends. We were seated approx in the middle. Suddenly a chillum wandered over the rows and we gladly puffed. Then Into The Mystic started, , , and it was so looooong, but immaculately well timed that it simply made me melt down. That chord change from E to B in the chorus did it and it's never been forgotten. Hahe, , , so grraaand ^ and I still love the tune Apart from the, the whole album is splendid - Moondance
62burst Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Ah, Moondance. A best musical memory was having the privilege of playing the bass part for Moondance at a bonfire jam on a summer's eve. Don't think it would've been as fun on a dread. And as the weekend is coming soon, mention must be made of one of the best Van and The Band performances at The Last Waltz, but first a few notes: * Possibly the best performance of Caravan ever. * Lesson in how to sync with the band, and drive them higher, 101. *Enjoyable to watch Bandmate's surprised expressions as they didn't really know what Van was gonna do next. *Best high kick in a song (sorry, Elvis). *Best exit. Ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJXVD-nSSKE Happy Birthday, Van.

Ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJXVD-nSSKE Happy Birthday, Van. 62 - Great exit. Yes! But the best exit is the one Bromberg does with his full band in "Such a Night". Ive seen this three times too. He stops playing and singing and leaves. A few measure later, the other guitarist leaves. A few more... the sax and trumpet stop and leave. Few more... drummer. Then bass... until only the trombone stays, keeping beat, playing just as if the whole band was there. Comedic. Dramatic. Happy. Thanks for that Van Caravan.
Rambler Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 *Best exit. Ever." Drops the mike. (actually, that Caravan shtick was in his gig at least since 74. Who knew? Not Robbie, Rick and Lee!)
Rambler Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 "But... he plays Ovations..." Except for when he plays... Gibsons. Or, martins.
MissouriPicker Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Morrison has a lot of cool tunes, but "Brown-eyed Girl" has to be one of the all-time best songs ever. One of those songs that everyone in the world has heard.
E-minor7 Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Except for when he plays... Gibsons. If that ain't a square Southern Jumbo, , , , , , and a slope J-50. .
kelly campbell Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 Happy Birthday Van. The man created a lot of great songs. Love Brown Eyed Girl and Moondance and a whole lot of other VM songs.
2chord wonder Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I like the Last Waltz too. Seeing him young and skinny reminds me of when I was young and skinny. Happy birthday Van!
Smurfbird Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 Astral Weeks, St. Dominic's Preview (on cover with a Martin), Veedon Fleece (on the cover with 2 dogs), Wavelength, Into the Music, Common One, Beautiful Vision and onward...gorgeous stuff. Best mix: Common One's "When Heart Is Open" mixed with side 2 of Miles Davis' In a Silent Way.
