Mr. Gibson Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 I want to buy a fender tube amp,but not sure which one. Leaning toward 65 Deluxe or Twin Reverb.Anybody have one or both? I play sgs,Les Pauls, firebird, and tele. And I play every kind of music clean and dirty. Wanna hear your thoughts, since I live here in bumfuk,Egypt there's no trying one out live so looking for info.
Dub-T-123 Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 How loud do you need to play? I got a twin reverb pretty recently and it is an amazing amp. If you want clean sounds at stage volume (no mic), it is the amp for you, but it is extremely loud at the point of overdrive (no master volume) One thing I love about the twin reverb is that it not only sounds great at high volume, but has an extremely useable and great sound even at the lowest volume settings (perfectly usable in an apartment contrary to what you may think) The Deluxe Reverb also sounds fantastic either clean or dirty, and it would be a better option if you want to get some overdriven sounds at a lower volume level. You won't get the same clean headroom as the Twin. The Blues Jr is another good option, but even with low output pickups, it is going to sound overdriven at the volume level where you can keep up with drums and bass. It has great clean sounds, but you will absolutely need to mic the amp to get clean sounds at stage volume in my experience The best choice for you will depend on your needs. How loud you want to play, how dirty, do you need a master volume, etc One thing that I wasn't thinking about much when looking at fender amps is the vibrato (tremolo). This isn't an effect that I used much before, but the vibrato on the twin reverb and deluxe reverb is to die for. I use it all the time now. With the reverb and tremolo on the Twin, you actually have access to some great effects without even using any pedals
'Scales Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 ...or the Twin Custom 15 if you wanna shake the foundations!
SmokeyGhost Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 ...or the Twin Custom 15 if you wanna shake the foundations! Yours or theirs? It's important stuff to know you realise. If it's a really annoying neighbour for sure but if their mine, you had better look out.
'Scales Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 If it's a really annoying neighbour for sure but if their mine, you had better look out. ...sounds like grounds for it being both. no mate, the venue's of course - jeez, cranking one up in the lougeroom would be like swatting a fly with an axe!
kidblast Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 The 65 deluxe is gonna break up much faster than will the twin. If you want crystal clear cleans at loud volumes, and will use a pedal for gain and over driven tones, the Twin would be the way to go. if you don't mind the lifting, the twin is going to be way heavier than the deluxe. so if that's a factor to think about, the deluxe is going to be easier to lug around knowing more about your particular setup (pedal board config) would help have you thought about any others? There's quite a few to chose from these days.
Guest Farnsbarns Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 The supersonic 22 has to be about the most versatile. I'd suggest trying one.
Mr. Gibson Posted September 2, 2016 Author Posted September 2, 2016 Full lineup of MXR and fender pedals and dark matter distortions by tc electronics, weight doesn't matter won't be leaving my guitar room. I have a AC30,AC4 Vox amps, mustang 3 and mustang 5 amps also. Fender Excelsior tube amp too. I wish I could try a super sonic Farns but the stores here don't have anything.
badbluesplayer Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 They're all good. If you want to get some overdriven sounds out of the amp then the Supersonics are probably the best. The Hot Rod series of amps, including the Blues Junior and the Hot Rod Deluxe and others are also good for overdriven sounds. If you want cleaner sounds you can get into the reissue reverb type amps, like the Deluxe Reverb, Super Reverb, Vibroverb and Twin Reverb. They're a little more expensive and are copies of the older vintage amps. [thumbup]

So many good options. It really depends on your usage.... Home or gigging? Are you playing with a full band and a loud drummer or a small, quiet trio or just jamming at home? Do you use pedals for gainy sounds or do you expect the amp to overdrive?
J.4knee Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 The 65 Twin Reverb is the undisputed king of clean tones to my ear. It has a ton of headroom so you need to crank it and push some pedal born crunch for a good break up. If you want both clean and good amp born OD, (if you can find one ) a Blues Deville 410 is a great choice. I use a Supersonic 112 60 watt amp, (another hard to find amp) it has a good choice of Bassman and Vibrolux options on the clean side and the dirty channel has master volume and 2 gain controls tone controls along with a master spring reverb for both channels ...and you can get pretty dirty. The real question is how loud do you need or want to get? Fender has a new series of Bass Breaker amps out that I have read some good info on but I have not played through one yet.
kidblast Posted September 2, 2016 Posted September 2, 2016 I was gonna toss out supersonic and the deville too, but, for some reason, I kept silent!

I tried out one of those Bass Breaker amps when I was looking at the Twin and Deluxe RIs. They sound nice, but are really more in the Marshall camp tone wise to my ears. More mids and crunch than a typical Fender amp I was going to suggest the Supersonic, but I knew Farns is the resident proponent for those :) I think the Supersonic would be a great option for clean or dirty. Certainly easier to get dirty sounds out of the Supersonic than the Twin or Deluxe

Kenny V Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 If you are planning on playing out at large venues then the twin is the way to go. If this is for home use the best bang for your money is the Deluxe Reverb Reissue. It sound great, takes pedals well and ways a whole lot less than a Twin Reverb. I own both amps and they sound fantastic.
Dennis G Posted September 3, 2016 Posted September 3, 2016 I have a Blues Junior and really like it a lot, but as noted before, you may not find it loud enough on its' own for gigging. Mine is strictly home use, and it's fine for me. On a side note, I took the Fender Factory tour a few years ago (Corona, CA) and while I really wanted to see and hear about their amps, it was basically a "guitar" tour, followed by "oh yeah, here's where we build the amps, now move along" type of thing. That said, Fender does make some great amps (just Google who has used them over the years).

Mr. Gibson Posted September 3, 2016 Author Posted September 3, 2016 Well I need to piss the neighbors off and they all live a mile away either direction but I want overdrive and distortion to work well.
Dub-T-123 Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Well I need to piss the neighbors off and they all live a mile away either direction but I want overdrive and distortion to work well. If you mean overdrive and distortion PEDALS, either the Twin or Deluxe will be fantastic (just about any decent fender amp really!). Most of the Proguitarshop YouTube pedal demos are recorded with a Deluxe Reverb RI, so they seem to think it sounds great with pedals too. Really, either amp will be great. Personally I like the Twin because I can play CLEAN with a loud drummer and bassist no problem. Others may prefer the Deluxe because you can get overdriven sounds at a more reasonable volume. If your neighbors are a mile away each direction, you can get away with just about anything!
thejay Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Always wanted a twin but fear I don't need that kind of clean headroom as they get loud! Had 65 Princeton I really liked but not loud enough. Currently have a 68 custom deluxe reverb and I love it.
surfpup Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 I would just add that before you buy a reissue full of modern circuit board wizardry, you should consider a vintage model. Generally the silver face versions 68-78ish can be had for about the same price and they are built like tanks. Hard to beat, unless you really want it to be new.
Dub-T-123 Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 Yeah the brand new amps are really pricey. Surfpup is right that you can often find a vintage model for less money than a brand new one. If you go vintage you'll definitely want to try before you buy or have an amp tech go over the amp for you. Some of the silverface ones that I've played were super noisy when you turn the reverb past 0
brc Posted September 4, 2016 Posted September 4, 2016 I bought a new 1965 Fender Bandmaster, and it still has all the factory tubes in it. But if I were to buy a tube amp today I think I would go with the twin reverb. Had one many years ago and wish I had it today.
