Yeah, he's taking a real hit on this. It's kind of how this guitar things works. You buy it because you just can't live without it, and then it turns-out that in reality you can live without it. We've all been there and done that. Some of us several times....... It certainly looks and sounds like a good deal. I hope he gets his asking price. Beyond that, I've already got a great J45.

To be fair, he could surely have gotten it for less than $4000. EM Shorts guitars seems to sell new Gibsons at about a 40% discount (give or take--Martins can be had at 40% discount). I think the retail price on a J-45 Vintage is $5190, the MAP is $4000, and 40% discount would be $3100.

My SJ-200 in special edition heritage cherry seems to retail for $6100 (wowza!) and sells for $4200 or something, more than this J-45 Vintage, but I think I paid $3500 for it at EM Shorts. That's more than a 40% discount.

Yep, I checked. I paid $3385, brand new with warranty (and fresh from the factory). They did a setup on it for me, too.

So if this seller really paid $4000, which is entirely possible, yes, he's taking a hit, but even $3000 used isn't that great when a new one could be had for about the same. Not trying to ruin it for him or anything. Just think people should know that it's possible to get a Gibson way below MAP.

I also was wondering why he paid $4000. It does have the pick up installed, which would save the buyer that expense. But still.... Hope it works out okay for him.

Thanks for the real world numbers on the number(s) to shoot for when buying a new Gibson, Jesse, and for the heads-up on EM Shorts. The AGF seller has that $3K/offer as ppg, PayPal Gift(?), which is a risky way to do business with someone you don't know well. It avoids the PayPal fee of

2.9 %; probably not worth the risk to save <$90. Plus, the shipping is on the buyer. Would EM Shorts include free shipping?

Nice guitar- it would be an interesting a/b with an oldie.

Yeah, I would never pay for something this expensive with PayPal Gift - you have no protection; it's essentially a non-reversible transaction unless the seller agrees to reverse it.

I got nervous paying for a record on Reddit with PayPal gift and that was $9.

Hard to believe the guy paid 4K. I have a local 5 star dealer that would sale it for 2,900. Even with the tax I'd have to pay only 135 more. It sounded great (i played it) and liked the rounder neck - but I have a nice played in early '90's SJ, so it wasn't a temptation.

If they're new at 2900, I doubt he'll get 3000 for this one. I wouldn't pay new price for a used guitar.

Cheers bengal but I've got a 45

And I love it . A 45 is one guitar I'll not need to look for . Unless jt comes over all funny and decides to give me his , I'll keep the one I have

Just messin' with you. I've heard you play your 45, quite well I might add. I just thought your being all excited about those cooked tops would carry the day! [biggrin]

I'd love to see some videos doing an A/B with old vs. torrefied. Or even brand new standard vs brand new baked.

I think EM Shorts does charge for shipping, maybe about $40-50, depending upon one's location. (It was a bit odd for me, as it went from Montana to Kansas to me in ND, but it would have been odd if it had shipped right from Montana/Gibson to me without the dealership having a look/fiddle.)

I've had good luck with PayPal gift, but I didn't realize one gives up their right to mitigation. That makes sense. You lose the fees and then PayPal doesn't have to spend time/money if you get ripped off. I guess that's why they call it friends/family/gift, because it's presumably an option for people you know well. To be fair, it is not meant to be used for purchases but rather literally for gifts of money.

You guys reallly not see why he'd post a larger price to compare to his selling price ?

I guess he has to, but he's relying upon folks who don't know (or care) about discounts if he wants to get his asking price. Granted a lot of people don't know how steeply discounted Gibsons can be. I think if people knew, Gibson would sell a lot more guitars. (I know this isn't the case in the UK and elsewhere! You guys pay a pretty penny.)

4th Photo shows more than a 'few' pick marks in my book. Both sides of pickguard..and he's out it out for a few gigs. Sorry I wouldn't be paying as new price for this at all.

Paying full price + taxes in Canada for a new one , today, equates to $3200 US.
