Sound City amps are back!

One of my 1st - think it was my 1st - valve amps was a Sound City bass amp, bought about....1971?....cannot remember at the mo if it was a 60 or 120. Eventually traded it to a dealer.....

..who moved to the South Coast....many years later, the bassplayer in my current band (lives on the South Coast) owns a vintage Sound City bass amp which I think may be the same one.

Think it must need a service now..... [biggrin][thumbup]

No man. Didn't last but a year probably, traded them for...don't remember what, but around that time I started using Peaveys so I'll guess I traded all that Sound City stuff for an amp or two and some PA stuff. They sold Sound City as affordable Marshalls, which they most definitely were not. The drummer of that band and a couple others we were in later, died a couple years ago, reminded me of my Sound Shitty days toward the end there. Good times, not so good amps.

I think the amps were just weak sauce. A Twin had way more balls, way more punch, much more presence. The Sound City turned all the way up with an LPB-2 in front was still not flappin my Cheap Jeans. Peavey was really getting big with their two gain stages, like a Mesa, only we could afford them. And the local shoppe that we hung at went all Peavey around that time so we had our pick for stupid cheap. I literally went through 4 or 5 Peavey Classics in just a couple years. Great amps, it was a good time.

The guitar, not so much either. I was drafted to play in a really big name band, Wintergreen for anyone from the SJ area in the 70's. They were all older than me by a couple years, I was way behind them. I used that Firebird at a little dive up in Berlin/Clementon NJ, and it went pretty well. But down at the circle in Brooklawn there was the very famous D1ck Lees and Bogeys Circle Tavern. I took that Firebird to Bogeys on a Thursday 5 sets 9 - 2 start of three nights. The noise was horrific. Awful. Could not be tamed. Those pickups had been a problem the whole time I owned that thing, Bogeys just had too much stuff making too much noise. Went to Toms house after the first set, got a strat, I used it the rest of the weekend and traded that Firebird the following Tuesday. I think it went for my second L-6. I wasn't in that band much longer either.

I was going to comment that you look like you're 14-15 in that first pic and the other guys look like 25.

Cool story though!

love these old pics members share here!

that guy in the crowd first pic, looking down, towards the middle right side of the photo, a dead ringer for a guy I've known since forever.. in 76, that is EXACTLY the hair cut, and stash Scott wore. Crazy resemblance. Of course, Not him though, unless you played that gig in Central Mass. but ya didn't cuz I would been there, staring you down! "Who are these guys?" !LOL!

I also remember the sound city amps, but at the time, I was using an Ampeg Vt222 100wat head and 2 4x12 cabs. That thing would melt concrete. The head alone was close to 80lbs. Ah but for Rock,, yea man we were GODS! (well as long as we could find people to help us haul and transport the gear that is.)

Yes, he was one of a handful of brothers from whom successive high school generations copped. If you get my drift.

I do! not sure where you were in 76, but we'd all just graduated and were off to "change the world" one Budweiser and a bone at a time... I was married the next year.. after that, it's all a blur..

We were two years behind you, making preparations to do the very same!
