chasAK
I have a Dove question. My son’s viola teacher’s husband hasa pitifully neglected Dove (92) that I pass my time with during my son’slessons. The strings are several years old. I do not have any maple guitars andam wondering what type of strings she needs: 80/20s or PBs. Thanks Chas
E-minor7
God question. In my opinion Doves quickly get extraordinary smooth'n'mellow, so I say 80/20's, , , due to the logic they are a bit edgy compared to the ph.b.'s. At the other hand, if you want that maple syrup to drip away sweeter than sweet, go phosph. When the steel fades the difference won't be too big anyway. . I have bronze 12-54 on both my maple squares. Martins SP's put on the same date. One of them is a 1996 Dove. Better than splendid, , , but very dovish. Jesse_Dylan
I wonder if the brand of string will matter more than the composition of said strings' alloy. I think it'll sound good no matter what you put on it. With other long-scale, maple guitars, I would worry about being too bright and garish, but I don't think that will be a problem with a Dove. kidblast
maybe put a set of elixr nano web 80/20s, or cleartones, on it.. at least they will last and sound good for quite a while and be at the ready while you kill time...
jvi
Im starting to believe the only answer to " what strings questions" -is to just try sets till you find one you like, what i like and play is irrelevant and likely unhelpfull.

True, but some folks are on the relative beginner rung and need some guidance. Nothing wrong with that. QM aka Jazzman Jeff
chasAK
I generally use PBs on mahogany and 80/20s on rosewood. Many on this forum follow the same suit. I do not have experience with maple and was just wonder what the general proto call is. It is not my guitar and I am not going to put much into it. It bothers me to see such a nice instrument so neglected. Old strings do have a nice punchy sound but these things are as dead as a doorknob. I would love to see this thing brought back to life. Jesse_Dylan
Maybe you should offer to buy it! If you can't convince him, maybe you can convince her and she can convince him and you could get a nice deal.
chasAK
Jesse, I already tried that it didn't work. :( Thanks for all the replies. The Acoustic Monk convinced me of 80/20s and then confused me with PBs. Life is rough isn't it!! I think I will try the 80/20 and bare the metallic sound for a few weeks. Who knows, when I get bored of that maybe I'll springfor some PBs. It will help me pass the time away during my son's lessons. Charlie

Why not buy a set of phosphs and 1 straight bronze, write Dove on the packs and then switch a bit back'n'forth. Of course of same brand and gauge - fx Gibson or Martin. chasAK
Sorry for the late response. I've been busy and this is a very busy time of the year for me. I put DR Sunbeams on my son's viola instructor's Dove. I play the Dove while he is having his lesson. The first two weeks the strings were very bright, but surprisingly for DRs the third week they sounded superb. It was not as warm like my j45 but it had a gentle soft sound. It had clear highs and lows. The lows had a more rounded tone as compared to the j45. The highs were not as sweet as the 45 but were very clear without being piercing at all. The guitar had more sustain than I expected. The old strings were dead beyond life and death. The guitar is amazingly balanced across the spectrum!! Its richness came out when finger picking (what little I can do). With a pick it was crystal clear, balance, and had good note separation. I still think that with a pick it would do excellent service to jazz cord. The clarity and balance is there. So, thanks for the advice. Now my son's lessons get done too quickly!! Ps While going through my strings I found an old set of Pyramid PBs. I put them on my 45 and now have a bone to pick with EA. They do have a clearer and woodier sound than the Sunbeams. I'm still debating if they are worth the price difference. If I don't post again before Christmas, I wish you all a good and godly Merry Christmas. chasAK

slimt
Daddario lights. Try a set of meds. But you may find those to be stiff. I use those on all my guitars. But thats just me. Even the ones that have not been changed in 20 plus years
