Where Do You Stand On......?

When I took that shot he had me baled up at the end of a narrow jetty in remote east Gippsland. I think he figured he would scare me into jumping into the water so he could eat my lunch and then my bait.

I thought it was fun until he kept coming, and then I saw the claws....he was more that 5' long by the way.

Thought you'd never ask!

Being aware that if I had stood up and startled the beastie he was likely to run up my front like he would a tree, using those wicked curved claws, I outsmarted him!

I took some crusts from a sandwich I had half consumed for lunch and threw them behind and beyond him, he turned to reach for them and while he was turning the other way I got up and started whacking him gently but firmly on the flanks behind his forelegs and that got him slowly heading in that direction. Once he was fully committed to that action I shooed him down and off the jetty.

Then I went back to fishing and the other half of my sandwich.

I only learned later how easily that whole affair could have gone south!

It seems I was very lucky.

Rather magnificent though isn't he?

I guess being an Aussie you blokes were expecting me to whip out a massive knife and to drag him into the water where we would fight to the death, sorta a la MIck Dundee were you?

To tell the truth I'd hate to hurt him~

Never would think that because I know you love and respect animals over there. No, not Mick Dundee, your more like Steve Irwin. But wouldn't they attack a small child playing outside if they were hungry enough? Those claws would rip one apart that size. You did hear about what happened at Disney World awhile back didn't you? While watching a movie outside in a RV Park by the shore, an alligator grabbed a small child and took him in the water for a death roll. The parents tried to fight but the kid drowned and died.

Where do I stand on a Goanna?

Certainly not the tail.

I don't stand anywhere on them. I get the hell out of there fast Rob!

Are they called Goannas because some lady named Anna was being chased by one, and someone started yelling Go Anna? :)

They are common enough in the more isolated areas of bush in my area and to the NSW border but habitation is sparse in the areas this particular type of Goanna live. They are reasonably shy normally but this one lives around a remote park with tables and toilets for picnics. Its mostly only accessible by 4WD drive track which is how we got in that day, or by water from the lake system which happens to be where I often fish. This one has been spoiled by people feeding it aand is accostomed to humans, I'd say. I think they are mainly scavangers and the issue of it doing an Azaria Chamberlain hopefully is a moot point.

This was meant to be a whimsical piece, totally not about guitars, and after all this Lounge is the off topic area,,and Goannas are about as off yopic as you can get.

I'm pleased with the amount of general interest in my big mate though...good on you!

Geez Dig, he's a beauty - we'd be proud to have that up here and we've got plenty of em already.

Big bugger! Must be a few missing cats round that area.

I shall curb my natural instincts to comment about cats and Goannas because I know that there are people that love cats here Scalesie,

That was one of the bigger examples I've been up close to and more common are the 4' models in my experience.

Maybe he got fat from devouring isolated elderly

fishermen on remote jetties?

Grin~

Logical thought processes there Brad, just a I'd expect from you but no, I doubt whether our Aboriginal cousins knew anyone called Anna when that name came into use. You havent been listening to this bloke have you?

I am pro goanna; so much so that I'm incubating a clutch of Dumeril's Monitor eggs on the dining room table as I write this.

They're wonderful animals.

P.S.

I'm really looking forward to them hatching out as my a$$ fell asleep from sitting on the eggs about a week ago.
