Salfromchatham
I wanted to share my new guitar and how she plays fingerpicked. Forgive the short selection, and the warts, as its a song I am working on and kind-of above my pay grade.
Jalex
Nice Sal, I agree the Hummingbird makes for a great fingerpicking guitar even though it's better known for being a strummer. It's certainly not a one trick pony.
MissouriPicker
Just saw your "bird" thread from a few days back. This sounds great, Sal. No bull. No exaggeration. The guitar is deep and very clear. And it's a beauty. Welcome to "The Bird Club." Absolutely great guitar to sit behind and even the bad notes sound sweet on a Hummingbird..........That's some fine fingerpicking too. If it's above your pay grade, it ain't by much. Salfromchatham
Thanks MP. I do love the guitar... And my picking is mediocre at best. I could never play the whole song, as the rhythm needs to be so steady... Let alone the fact that I couldn't actually mange singing over it... Walk and chew gum and all of that... Avery
Yeah, the bird sounds great picked too, Sal. To me, birds have one of the most distinctive tones... I'm curious to know the song... it sounds cool, picking sounds cool too. As far as the "walking and chewing gum" thing: you'll get there, no doubt. Just play it every day for months even, and then the playing part will become something you don't even have to think about. At least that works for me. Salfromchatham
Give this a shot, Avery https://youtu.be/9NLZCLKppZs And I. Can't figure out at all how he plays it. He does some very weird picking. If you can make it easier for me I'll owe you...
Buc McMaster
Well I like it. The guitar, that is. Your picking sounds great (I'm jealous!) and your tempo holds up well..........very nice, Sal. Seems to be a flock of Hummingbirds on the forum........some recent, some been in hands for a time. I'm on my second. Speaks well of the model, me thinks, to be so favored.

If you can make it easier for me I'll owe you... I wish I could now...but I'm kind of swamped with some life stuff. Maybe Jalex can...he's a really good player, I can tell, from his bird demo...Although I'm not putting him on the spot...maybe he's busy too. Jesse_Dylan
Never been a John Mayer fan. I prefer the Sal version! Agreed, definitely not a one-trick bird. I think the Vintage might actually pick better than the standard.
blindboygrunt
Well that's an ear worm song if ever there was one ... in spite of not liking it much I can't get it outta my head. So maybe I do like it ? I think it's Mayer I don't like ,or can't warm to with all the girls drooling at him and god don't he know it .. he's one of those guys who if he was uglier would be much better . Not like your guitar , which is just a beauty. If I read that your sellng that one I'll be fairly annoyed. Don't get much better than that. And Avery is right , a few weeks and the song will fall into muscle memory .. Post some more will ya ? P.s. Yours is lovely too buc
Lars68
Nice Sal! Impressive picking. You've come so far that it will only take repetition to get the patterns inte muscle memory. I don't like John Mayer's voice at all. I would much rather hear you do this song. Lars
kidblast
of course it works! why wouldn't it? a 6 string in the hands of a talented player such as yourself, and anything goes lad..

EuroAussie
Yes, they are great finger pickers with the right material. I was originally pretty critical with the Birds as pickers as i thought they didnt cut through so much and i had to really dig in deep to get a bit of volume from them. However i realised that for folky and melodic tunes like that lovelly one you played, they just shine charm and richness. Still dont think they make particularly good blues boxes, and i notice when i play my HBTV plugged in i have to increase the volume by some 25% when fingerpickig, unlike the brighter maple J-150. But no question they have a real charm being played with fingers.

I've never had a guitar that didn't need turned up for fingers as opposed to plectrum Wouldn't an undersaddle pickup render any sort of tone wood moot ?? Can't see how what it's made of would matter to volume ? I'm no veteran of live playing though ... but it's a hell of a fault in my j45 that it doesn't come with a volume control as standard .. beyond me that one . Doesn't matter though as sal isn't gonna plug this thing in . I'd really wanna know what it sounds like live though , don't know how he's not going to let curiosity get the better of him . Trans amulet , nothing less for that beauty though He's bound to have some birthday money left over

I think the Vintage might actually pick better than the standard. I like picking on my standard and already wrote about it in another thread. It is not as bright as what you get from a Martin but hummy deep balanced sound suits very well to most fingerpicked ballads... As it has been recorded in a few other videos i've seen, the sound is rather close to the above posted by Sal, once it started to open.
Salfromchatham
I think this bird picks real well. It is quite sweet, although the body of my J50 is more comfortable to sit with. No pickup; I promise! I didnt even opt for a strap button. As the most expensive guitar I have owned, Id like to keep this thing timeless for the next owner... (Kidding!) Jesse_Dylan
I bought a "relic'd" or whatever nickel or something strap button, a felt washer, and even a special drill bit. That's right. I'm going to put a strap button on my Hummingbird Vintage myself. But. I might practice on my WM-00 and Guild D-20 first! The end pin they come with is pretty neat though. It's sort of a goldish looking screw thing with white plastic ("IVOROID") around it. If I ever did put a pickup in my Vintage, the only one I'd consider would be the Baggs Lyric. I don't think I ever will though.
